Late Quartets Beethoven

The Calidore Quartet begin their new cycle of Beethoven's complete String Quartets with the Late Quartets, a 3-volume set of Opp. 127, 130, 131, 132, 133 & 135. Performances of the Calidore String Quartet are renowned for their "deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct" (New York Times). The Legendary Quatuor Mosaïques celebrates its 30th anniversary with a fabulous return to disc: the immense and demanding Everest of the last string quartets of Beethoven. The late string quartets are themselves exceptional: metaphysical masterpieces in which almost all of human emotion and pioneering musical concepts exist. The cycle represents a unique entity in the entire history of music. The Quatuor Mosaïques, performing on period instruments,delivers stunning and rarely equalled performances, perfectly balanced between purity, precision and a sublime harmonic richness.

These six works are Beethoven's last major completed compositions. Extremely complex and largely misunderstood by musicians and audiences of Beethoven's day, the late quartets are now widely considered to be among the greatest musical compositions of all time and have inspired many later composers.

I first heard the late string quartets of Beethoven in my teens, on a budget price LP on the French Musidisc label. I don’t remember much about the performances; one movement that sticks in my mind is the slow movement of Op. 127, which was played at an expansive tempo, and took around twenty minutes. However I do remember the liner-notes, which were obviously translated by someone for whom English was not their first language.
