Late Shift

In a dusty, underpopulated California resort town, a naive southern waif, Pinky Rose (Sissy Spacek), idolizes and befriends her fellow nurse, the would-be sophisticate and “thoroughly modern” Millie Lammoreaux (Shelley Duvall). When Millie takes Pinky in as her roommate, Pinky’s hero worship evolves into something far stranger and more sinister than either could have anticipated. Featuring brilliant performances from Spacek and Duvall, this dreamlike masterpiece from Robert Altman careens from the humorous to the chilling to the surreal, resulting in one of the most unusual and compelling films of the 1970s.

When art student Ben Willis is dumped by his girlfriend Suzy, he develops chronic insomnia after finding out how quickly she moved on. To pass the long hours of the night, he starts working the late night shift at the local supermarket. There he meets a colorful cast of characters, all of whom have their own 'art' in dealing with the boredom of an eight-hour-shift. Ben's art is that he imagines himself stopping time. This way, he can appreciate the artistic beauty of the frozen world and the people inside it - especially Sharon, the pretty and quiet checkout girl, who perhaps holds the answer to solving the problem of Ben's insomnia.

It's enough to make a cartoon lover's eyes bug out. About half of the 67 shorts in the laserdisc set The Compleat Tex Avery and most of the 70 cartoons in The Golden Age of Looney Tunes, Volume 3 are — aOOOga! — new to video and (for now, at least) exclusive to disc. Although these compilations aren't in CAV format, which means you can't freeze-frame or slo-mo the exploding animals unless you buy a player with pricy digital effects, the picture quality still makes tape look smeary by comparison.
Arranged chronologically, the nine-hour Compleat Tex Avery gives the silliest of material a suitably absurdist archival cachet. It actually catalogs only the director's years at MGM (Avery also worked at Warner Bros. and for Walter Lantz), but for his very best cartoons, this is one-stop shopping.
