This critically acclaimed album was the first time the music of Stan Kenton and his orchestra had been performed since his passing, and the last time so many of the original Kenton stars would gather together to record in the studio again. This pivotal project, gave impetus, to countless live tributes to Stan Kenton's music the world over, since its release in 1987. It was the trust in Paul Cacia as a producer, why so many stars participated, garnering accolades for the production quality, as well as the trumpet work of Paul Cacia.

The title Three Guitars in Bossa Nova Time is misleading in that only two guitars in any instance play the material, while tenor saxophonist Bob Enevoldsen is more important to the overall sound of the music than any other performer. In the main, Herb Ellis and Laurindo Almeida take charge on most of the songs, certainly all bossa novas and light sambas, accompanied by the pianist Donn Trenner (who worked on television with Steve Allen), bassist Bob Bertaux, lesser-known percussionists Bob Neel or Chico Guerrero, the more famous Milt Holland, and guitarist Johnny Gray on three tracks in place of Almeida. All of these selections are familiar, whether as Brazilian songs or Latinized mainstream jazz, while Ellis is upfront in the mix and definitely the leader.

Altoist Bud Shank (who doubles on flute) and acoustic guitarist Laurindo Almeida first teamed up in 1954 to make a couple of albums called Brazilliance that hinted at but greatly predated bossa nova. Shank and Almeida came together 20 years later to form the L.A. Four, a quartet also including bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne. Their debut recording as a unit was made at the 1974 Concord Jazz Festival, and it finds the appealing musicians blending together well on bossa nova tunes (including "Manha de Carnaval"), Almeida's classical-oriented originals, and some swing. This was a particularly inventive chamber jazz band.

This is one of the several collaborations between Laurindo Almeida, Ray Brown, Jeff Hamilton and Bud Shank - better known as the L.A.4 - and it stands as one of the most sincere, elegant performances of jazz arrangements and crossover pieces I have ever heard. The egos are gone, replaced with passionate, intense, but never overstated performances.
In Almeida's arrangement of Faure's "Pavane, op. 50," Bud Shank's sensitivity for the classical flute blends sweetly with Almeida's true understanding of the original, then transformed into an enlightening jazz arrangement. Ray Brown's bass playing is classic and Jeff Hamilton's performance is solid. Hearing this album, in contrast to much of the jazz & pizazz marketed today, transmits a "they don't make 'em like they used to" sense which is welcomed by the nostalgic listener.
