The album 'Motion' was originally released on LP with five tracks and later on CD with eight. All those tracks were taken from the session on 29 August, 1961 and feature the trio with Elvin Jones on drums. However previous to this date there had been two earlier sessions with a trio featuring Nick Stabulas on drums. In 1997 Verve issued all the sessions on a three CD set, now sadly OOP. Whilst it is clear why the session with Elvin Jones was the one marked for release, the other sessions with Nick Stabulas are also excellent and offer a fascinating alternative glimpse of a 'work in progress'.

One of the outlets for bassist Charlie Haden's multifarious musical interests is the politically charged, progressive Liberation Music Orchestra. In July 1992, the Orchestra - a powerhouse of some of the top names in jazz - brought the collaborative sound of their album Dream Keeper to the Montreal International Jazz Festival. The African National Congress anthem, 'Nkosi Sikelel'I Afrika,' opens the program and sets the tone, with a blistering solo from the alto sax of Makanda Ken McIntyre and a more reflective one by tenor giant Joe Lovano.

“The Turn” is the third album of the Jerome Sabbagh Quartet. It follows the critically acclaimed “North” (elected album of the year in 2005 by the readers of French monthly Jazzman) and “Pogo” (4 stars in DownBeat in 2007). “The Turn” features a variety of songs that range from pop/rock influenced material (“Electric Sun”, “Banshee”) to more mysterious fare (“Cult”, “Ascent”), and find its cohesiveness in the improvising and the strength of the band sound. Jerome Sabbagh was one of the last saxophonists hired by Paul Motian. Sabbagh pays tribute to the legendary drummer by featuring his composition “Once Around the Park”, which is the only cover of the album.

Danish native Jacob Fischer is a rising star and one of the most in-demand jazz guitarists in Scandinavia and Europe. Born in 1967, the self-taught guitarist began working as a professional when he was 17 years old, and since then has participated in over 200 recordings. His fifth album as a leader, and his debut from the Japanese label Venus Records, is an ambitious project: A tribute to Bill Evans with a simple trio with Martin Wind on bass and Tim Horner on drums.
