A pregnant Alice Faye was forced to bow out of this colorful Fox musical, which instead went to Rita Hayworth, whom the studio borrowed from Columbia. Hayworth plays the highly fictitious Sally Elliott of the title, a musical star teaming up with Indiana boy Paul Dresser (Victor Mature), a runaway who after a brief stopover in a tank town medicine show arrives in Gay Nineties New York full of verve and vigor. There he composes the title tune for the fair lady and becomes the toast of Tin Pan Alley. There are the obligatory bumps on the road along the way, of course, but everything ends, as any Fox musical should, with a grand and glorious finale. Although Fox publicity claimed that My Gal Sal was based on a My Brother Paul, a biography by the composer's brother, Theodore Dreiser, it was actually concocted from an unpublished manuscript by Dreiser and his wife Helen Richardson.

Kenny Burrell's discography for the Fantasy label encompasses the middle period of his career, and though well played, it leaves one wanting. His Blue Note material from his earlier days is better, and his interpretations of Duke Ellington's music from that era are definitive. There are only two Ellington numbers here, so this collection only scratches the surface.

James Newton Howard has recently recorded his score for the upcoming HBO original movie All the Way. The film is directed by Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents, Trumbo, Game Change) and stars Bryan Cranston as President Lyndon B. Johnson, Anthony Mackie as Martin Luther King and Melissa Leo as Lady Bird Johnson. Bradley Whitford, Stephen Root, Marque Richardson, Aisha Hinds, Todd Weeks, Mo McRae, Spencer Garrett and Frank Langella are co-starring. The movie is based on Robert Schenkkan’s Tony Award-winning play of the same title and follows LBJ’s first year in office as he takes the oath in the wake of President Kennedy’s assassination, navigates the escalation of the Vietnam War and balances opposing interests to launch his landmark civil rights bill. Roach, Cranston and Schenkkan are also executive producing the Amblin Television, Tale Told Productions and Moonshot Entertainment production with Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank & Justin Falvey (The Americans, Falling Skies, Under the Dome).

My own approach to this album is from the Gary McFarland perspective. McFarland was an arranger, vibe player, and producer who operated for about a decade until his life was cut tragically short. He is the arranger (and one of the musicians) on this album. This album is best seen as a collaboration between Scott and McFarland. As such, it bears the hallmarks of McFarland's sound. His sound at this time was particularly reflective of the bossa nova and latin sounds that rose to prominence in the early-to-mid '60s. Latin Shadows is an excellent and successful example of McFarland's work, with the lovely Ms. Scott starring as the featured soloist.

Trying to shake things up, producer Creed Taylor brought in arranger Marty Sheller from Mongo Santamaria's Afro-Cuban band, reduced the sizes of the servings (no track is longer than 3:45), cranked up the decibels to a raucous level, and presented Benson in what he hoped would be a radio-friendly setting. The wonder is that Benson manages to transcend the blasting Latin-percussion-spiced production, the tight time limits, and all with often brilliantly tasty guitar fills and brief solos in many styles and three reverb-heavy vocals.

A repackaging of 1993's Midnight Mover: The Bobby Womack Collection, Anthology – released by Capitol's The Right Stuff subsidiary in 2003 – is an excellent overview (cheapo identikit design aside) that features just about every significant moment of Womack's most productive years. All his biggest hits, including "Lookin' for a Love," "Woman's Gotta Have It," "Nobody Wants You When You're Down and Out," "Daylight," and "Across 110th Street" are featured here, along with some album cuts that most casual fans will have no trouble appreciating. Short of picking up all the albums released during this era, you could not do any better. ~ Andy Kellman
