Kenny Burrell's discography for the Fantasy label encompasses the middle period of his career, and though well played, it leaves one wanting. His Blue Note material from his earlier days is better, and his interpretations of Duke Ellington's music from that era are definitive. There are only two Ellington numbers here, so this collection only scratches the surface.
My own approach to this album is from the Gary McFarland perspective. McFarland was an arranger, vibe player, and producer who operated for about a decade until his life was cut tragically short. He is the arranger (and one of the musicians) on this album. This album is best seen as a collaboration between Scott and McFarland. As such, it bears the hallmarks of McFarland's sound. His sound at this time was particularly reflective of the bossa nova and latin sounds that rose to prominence in the early-to-mid '60s. Latin Shadows is an excellent and successful example of McFarland's work, with the lovely Ms. Scott starring as the featured soloist.
A repackaging of 1993's Midnight Mover: The Bobby Womack Collection, Anthology – released by Capitol's The Right Stuff subsidiary in 2003 – is an excellent overview (cheapo identikit design aside) that features just about every significant moment of Womack's most productive years. All his biggest hits, including "Lookin' for a Love," "Woman's Gotta Have It," "Nobody Wants You When You're Down and Out," "Daylight," and "Across 110th Street" are featured here, along with some album cuts that most casual fans will have no trouble appreciating. Short of picking up all the albums released during this era, you could not do any better. ~ Andy Kellman
The second Jobim - Ogerman instrumental by all means recreates the atmosphere of the first one.The Composer of Desafinado Plays, and if you liked that one, you'll like Wave too. Recorded in 1967 by Jobim on piano and guitar and Claus Ogerman's orchestra, this album features some of Jobim's standards like Wave, Triste and Lamento No Morro. This album is a must for any serious Jobim's fans and all lovers of cool and soft bossa nova sound.
