This exciting CD has 20 diverse performances that were originally produced by Leonard Feather for the Victor label during 1946-47. The first eight selections feature various versions of Esquire's All-American Award Winners and have some unique combinations of musicians. "Long Long Journey" was the first record to match together Duke Ellington (who verbally introduces the song) and Louis Armstrong, and on "Snafu" Armstrong takes a surprisingly modern solo that hints at bebop. Trumpeter Charlie Shavers creates a remarkable improvisation on "The One That Got Away," ltoist Johnny Hodges plays beautifully on "Gone with the Wind" and other key players include tenor saxophonist Don Byas, trumpeter Buck Clayton, trombonist J.J. Johnson and tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. In addition, there are selections featuring trombonist Jack Teagarden, the 52nd Street All-Stars (with Shavers, Hawkins and tenorman Allan Eager), the tenor of Lucky Thompson, trumpeter Neal Hefti, altoist Benny Carter, singer Mildred Bailey and solo piano records by Art Tatum and Erroll Garner. The mid-to-late '40s were a particularly rich period for jazz and this highly recommended CD is filled with gems.

Originally released on 10-inch vinyl in early 1955, this album spotlights some of the best from Blue Note's West Coast jazz roster of the day, as the title implies, recorded in Los Angeles and featuring prominent jazz musicians from both coasts such as Harry "Sweets" Edison, Stan Levey, Conte Candoli and Marty Paich. The "blindfold test" refers to the fact that this was originally issued with no credits, presenting a challenge to jazz fans to identify the players who were only revealed on the second volume of this series.

Oliver Nelson was one of the more distinctive arrangers to be active in jazz, the studios, and popular music of the '60s. While most Nelson reissues focus on his always-excellent saxophone playing (whether on tenor or alto), this six-CD set, Argo, Verve and Impulse Big Band Studio Sessions, focuses on Oliver Nelson the arranger-composer-bandleader. He does take solos on some of these dates on tenor, alto, and soprano (his only recorded solos on that instrument), but it his writing that takes center stage.

This is a rather incredible collection: ten CDs enclosed in a tight black box that includes every one of the recordings Verve owns of Billie Holiday, not only the many studio recordings of 1952-57 (which feature Lady Day joined by such jazz all-stars as trumpeters Charlie Shavers and Harry "Sweets" Edison, altoist Benny Carter, and the tenors of Flip Phillips, Paul Quinichette and Ben Webster). Also included are prime performances at Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts in 1945-1947, an enjoyable European gig from 1954, her "comeback" Carnegie Hall concert of 1956, Holiday's rather sad final studio album from 1959, and even lengthy tapes from two informal rehearsals. It's a perfect purchase for the true Billie Holiday fanatic.

Electric Guitar Master features a nice cross section of guitarist Tiny Grimes' more jazz-oriented material. An astonishingly gifted musician who combined the lithe fretwork of Les Paul with the raw blues tradition of T-Bone Walker, Grimes is often overlooked in favor of more well-known artists such as Charlie Christian. Featuring such legendary artists as Coleman Hawkins and Art Tatum, this compilation includes various Grimes classics such as "Tiny's Tempo" and "Tiny's Boogie Woogie."

George Chisholm was one of Great Britain's finest trombonists of the 1935-1950 period. This definitive CD features him on sessions with clarinetist Danny Polo in 1938, two songs with pianist Gerry Moore's Chicago Brethren in 1937, a pair of titles with Lew Stone's Stonecrackers in 1941, and on his first three dates as a leader (from 1938 and 1944). The music falls between Dixieland and swing, with alternate takes helping to make each of the sessions quite complete.

This release presents a complete never before released live performance by the great Bill Evans with an unusual trio that never made a studio album (featuring drummer Philly Joe Jones and bassist Marc Johnson). Joining them are Lee Konitz for three amazing quartet tracks, Curtis Fuller (who joins Konitz and the trio for a marvelous quintet version of Lover Man), and Stan Getz and Christian Escoude (who join Fuller and the trio for the finale on All the Things You Are). A rare interview with Evans made right after the Nice concert has also been included on this release, as well as another unissued concert by the same trio taped in Italy a few days later.
