For a long time it was considered certain that the death of the gambist Carl Friedrich Abel in 1787 had, in a way, also buried the instrument. Thomas Fritzsch also shared the traditional conviction that as a gambist he was per se excluded from participating in the sound world of the 19th century. But then he came across several sources, including one in connection with Schumann, that point to the instrument’s continued existence. Here he not only presents some works on a viola da gamba of the early 19th century, but also proves impressively that the aesthetics of the Romantic period and the characteristic sound of the instrument are by no means mutually exclusive.

With the production "Wiener Frauen" (Viennese Women), the Lehár Festival 2022 presented a special work by Franz Lehár, who was an honorary citizen of Bad Ischl, with a large orchestra and a star cast: "Wiener Frauen" is considered, along with "Der Rastelbinder", to be Lehár's first operetta ever. Both operettas were sensational successes and Lehár became the new operetta king overnight. "Viennese Women" captivates with its wit, passion and temperament. Even in this early work of Lehár's, his signature is unmistakable…. This man could write catchy tunes: the "Nechledil March" was soon whistled from the rooftops - and not only in Vienna. Our complete recording is once again like a salvation!

We know Ignaz Jan Paderewski (1860-1941) as a legendary pianist, probably also as the first president of the newly founded state of Poland in 1918 - and we have certainly heard that he left behind a not insignificant compositional œuvre: In particular, his Piano Concerto in A minor and the Symphony in B minor "Polonia" have deservedly made it to recording honors. A similar one-off to these works is the opera Manru, which was premiered at the Dresden Semper Opera on May 29, 1901, and met with triumphant success.

It's incredible that a work considered as securely at the core of the Western musical canon as J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion didn't receive a complete recording until after the Second World War, and that prior to that, unabridged performances were exceptionally rare; even Mendelssohn's momentous 1841 Leipzig performance was heavily cut, and Mendelssohn's son reported that even so, much of the audience "fled yawning before it was over." The earliest nearly complete recording was made in 1941 with Leipzig's Gewandhaus Orchestra and Thomanernchor, and those same forces are brought together again, along with the Tölzer Knabenchor, in this 2009 performance led by Riccardo Chailly.
