Ricky Ford, tenor sax legend, needs no introduction, but he'll get one anyway because it's important to hear his lineage before diving into his new recording. After getting his start filling the Paul Gonsalves chair in the Duke Ellington Orchestra (under Mercer Ellington's leadership), Ford's gone on to play with Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, and Abdullah Ibrahim, to name but a few of his more illustrious stints. He is, quite simply, a national treasure. His latest recording, a tip of the hat to his early roots and a focused, fabulous blast of multi-hued bebop and traditional jazz, reflects tremendous taste and virtuosity, with nods to his heroes (Hawkins, Duke, Mingus, and others) and affirmation that the guy can still play with the best of them. While he may not have the same public profile as our present-day tenor heroes, he deserves every ounce of respect that they get and more. The Wailing Sounds of Ricky Ford: Paul's Scene, made with his accompanists pianist Mark Soskin, bassist Jerome Harris, and drummer Barry Altschul, is wondrous and his playing sounds as fresh today as it did decades back, when he was a true legend in the making.

Before Milt Jackson, there were only two major vibraphonists: Lionel Hampton and Red Norvo. Jackson soon surpassed both of them in significance and, despite the rise of other players (including Bobby Hutcherson and Gary Burton), still won the popularity polls throughout the decades. Jackson (or "Bags" as he was long called) was at the top of his field for 50 years, playing bop, blues, and ballads with equal skill and sensitivity.

It's time for another Merry Xmas round the jukebox, love songs to Santa and even one Christmas hymn. It's all in the name of rhythm and blues, doo wop and even a touch of rock and roll. In this new collection of 24 tracks there are no less than five tracks by the great Charles Brown. This popular blues balladeer was the undisputed king of Christmas blues from the 1940s until his death. The most recent recording comes from the late, great, queen of soul, Aretha Franklin who was having a "Blue Holiday" in 1962. We end this excursion into Christmas R&B, until perhaps next year, with the great blues guitarist Freddie King claiming "I Hear Jingle Bells" and we naturally hope you do too.

The new phenomenon electro swing Bart and Baker self-proclaimed "oldest active DJs" (almost a century between them). For 5 years their evenings dedicated to swing moods have been winning audiences trans-generational and some people like Dita Von Teese, Marc Jacobs, Max Raabe. There are many DJs who play retro music in France and abroad, but Bart & Baker have probably felt since their inception in 2005, there was a public open to a sophisticated blend of different genres of "crooning" and the French variety, the sounds of big band and of course their world variations, hip hop or electro-swing…

Charles Mingus' Finest Hour, while a fine and eccentric collection of music, is only his finest hour of music on the labels owned by Universal-Emarcy, Mercury, Verve, and a few others. These include sessions where Lionel Hampton ( and not Mingus) was the bandleader. No matter. The majority, and the best of the material here, comes from the wonderful Pre-Bird set issued on Emarcy with Ted Curson, Marcus Belgrave and many others in a 25-piece orchestra that played Mingus compositions written before he met Charlie Parker. The other stuff comes from live concerts including some fine European sounds with Eric Dolphy, and some of the Bethlehem material. This is a decent look at a strange period between periods - between Atlantic and Columbia - for the giant one.

One of the great jazz pianists of all time, James P. Johnson was the king of stride pianists in the 1920s. He began working in New York clubs as early as 1913 and was quickly recognized as the pacesetter. In 1917, Johnson began making piano rolls. Duke Ellington learned from these (by slowing them down to half-speed), and a few years later, Johnson became Fats Waller's teacher and inspiration. During the '20s (starting in 1921), Johnson began to record, he was the nightly star at Harlem rent parties (accompanied by Waller and Willie "The Lion" Smith) and he wrote some of his most famous compositions during this period. For the 1923 Broadway show Running Wild (one of his dozen scores), Johnson composed "The Charleston" and "Old Fashioned Love," his earlier piano feature "Carolina Shout" became the test piece for other pianists, and some of his other songs included "If I Could Be with You One Hour Tonight" and "A Porter's Love Song to a Chambermaid."

Boogie-Woogie piano had been around a long time before bandleaders got hold of the eight-to-the-bar and sent it to college. The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra recorded one of the earliest examples - circa 1938 - to hit the big time, showcasing their pianist Howard Smith. It was a sanitised version of the original Pinetop's Boogie Woogie. It proved to be an overnight sensation and fired up yet another Boogie-Woogie craze. Many swing bands, anxious not to be left out, altered their repertoire accordingly. The result was phenomenal.
