Listen Like Thieves may not have been INXS's biggest album—that honor would certainly belong to its world-conquering follow-up, 1987's Kick—but it is arguably the band's best album. Its predecessor, 1984's The Swing, found INXS working out how to fuse their innate "modern-rock" edge with their growing affinity for rhythmic intensity, while Kick was the sound of a band that had buffed all of their quirkier edges away in pursuit of becoming a highly optimized hit-single machine. Right in the middle was Listen Like Thieves, the very definition of a "pivotal" album, not just for what it meant for INXS, but also for a rapidly maturing "alternative" music scene. They always had aspirations of chart dominance, but were also always highly unique in their execution, merging guitar-forward rockisms, serpentine rhythms, vocal swagger, and unconventional arrangements in a way that made them instantly identifiable and a formidable live presence.

This is so long overdue! I have been waiting decades for a definitive Merry Go Round collection. Rev-Ola, a fantastic reissue outfit from the UK, has done a class job here. Great sound, complete track listing (29 songs plus a hidden track, historical, just check the liner notes to avoid confusion!) and excellent notes and photos. The core of this collection are the 14 songs that Rhino had issued in 1985 on LP, including the hits Live and You're a Very Lovely Woman, as well as the lesser known but exquisite Listen, Listen, On Your Way Out and the signature tune Come Ride, Come Ride, which in my opinion is a masterpiece of baroque pop psychedlia. There are some duff tracks, but this is fine considering the ages of the group members, and the rushed nature of their recordings.

Listen Like Thieves 40th Anniversary is a deep dive celebration into INXS’s global breakthrough album. The Deluxe Edition is a 1LP + 3CD set containing a brand-new 2025 stereo mix of the Listen Like Thieves album by Giles Martin; Paul Hicks on CD and vinyl. Built from the ground up in partnership with the band, they have been able to find new layers of sonic depth and a fresh dimension giving fans a new listening experience with the record. Also included is a trove of previously unreleased sessions tracks, outtakes and demos curated by Giles Martin, a rare BBC Recording; ‘Live From The Royal Albert Hall, London, 1986’, and extensive liner notes that include a brand new interview with the band by renowned journalist Paul Sexton.
