For the hardcore Little Richard fan – the kind that has to hear every recording the architect of rock & roll ever made – there's little question that Ace's Specialty Box Set is the motherlode. Spanning six discs and over a hundred tracks, this is for serious listeners. Since Specialty's condensed, three-disc version of this set also included numerous working versions, alternate takes and commercials, it was also targeted for dedicated listeners, but this set – which is twice as large – is for fans who love to immerse themselves in minute details and unfinished takes. For those listeners, this set is certainly worth the money, since it is lavishly produced and boasts every single thing Little Richard recorded at the label.

These are not the original Specialty recordings that made Little Richard famous as rock's original wildman; rather, they're late '70s stereo remakes of uncertain provenance (there are no musician or producer credits here). In any case, if you're looking for modern versions of these songs, you could do a lot worse. Whoever the musicians are, they've got that '50s New Orleans R&B groove down cold, particular the annonymous drummer and sax player, who do superb recreations of Lee Allen and Earl Palmer, Richard's original back up. The star himself is in excellent voice, if not quite as, er, out there as in his youth.

This compilation consisted of tracks recorded for Vee-Jay Records in 1964/1965. As covered on the entry for Little Richard Is Back (And There's A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On!), Richard recorded nearly fifty tracks for Vee-Jay Records in 1964/1965. With the collapse of Vee Jay, some tracks went unreleased until they appeared on Mr. Big and Talkin' 'bout Soul albums. But this rare compilation contains a most tracks from these sessions.

Legacy has offered up a Grammy-worthy (mostly) reissue compilation, and they did it well: they provided noteworthy, lesser-known progressive tracks from a real Rock and Roll originator and insured collectibility by including three missing gems found at the far end of the vaults. This set is primarily "The Explosive Little Richard" plus two four single sides (two of which came out only in Europe) and three miscellaneous.

The undisputed "King of Zydeco," Clifton Chenier was the first Creole to be presented a Grammy award on national television. Blending the French and Cajun 2-steps and waltzes of southwest Louisiana with New Orleans R&B, Texas blues, and big-band jazz, Chenier created the modern, dance-inspiring, sounds of zydeco.

The zydeco maestro assembled his roadworthy and definitely boogie-as-all-get-out combo in a studio in the Louisiana countryside and cut this entire album in one day, everything completely live except for one accordion overdub. Clifton Chenier was, of course, an undisputed master of zydeco music and listeners looking for a good example of him at his best should be eager to grab this or any of the artist's Arhoolie releases, as his work for this label is consistently top-notch. The good-natured and easy groove the band sets up should be instructive to any musicians interested in learning how to get people to dance. The medium tempo blues numbers such as "Quelque Chose Sur Mon Idee" are really beautiful, while the instrumental "Ride 'Em Cowboy" is simply lots of fun, the honking tenor sax and clickety-clacking rubboard riding high in the saddle
