John McLaughlin & Paco de Lucia: Paco and John - Live at Montreux 1987 it's truly a shame that, all too often, artists with diverse careers become pigeon-holed, defined by the primary genre in which they first achieved notoriety. Take guitarist John McLaughlin, for instance. Ask most jazz fans about him and what will first come out of most of their mouths will include either the words "fusion," "jazz-rock" and/or Miles Davis, in any permutation/combination (not that there's anything wrong with that). Those a little further in the know might also be aware of his longstanding investigation into the nexus of eastern and western music with his Indo-collaboration, Shakti.

John's history with the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival spans 52 years as a headlining artist and sometime guest performer. In 2022 he brought a masterclass in fusion to Stravinski Hall with his longtime band The 4th Dimension and award-winning special guest Jany McPherson sitting in on piano and vocals. Recorded on state-of-the-art mobile multi-track equipment, filmed in HD video, and mixed and mastered by George Murphy at London's Eastcote Studios, 'Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2022' is an immersive deep dive into the magic, improvisation, and virtuosity of the man Jeff Beck once called 'the greatest living guitarist' with a peerless band behind him.

In 1997, the band embarked on a world tour promoting their then-new album Black Moon, which included this performance at Montreux. It is the only film from this tour available. Comprised of NICE's keyboard player Keith Emerson , KING CRIMSON's bassist Greg Lake , and the ATOMIC ROOSTER's drummer Carl Palmer , 1970s supergroup EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER crafted expansive, near-orchestral prog-rock influenced by jazz and classical music. Disbanding in 1979 and embarking on various solo careers, the trio reunited in the 1990s to produce a new album, "Black Moon", for which they toured extensively in 1997. This concert captures EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER at the Montreux Jazz Festival that same year, performing a career-spanning selection of songs that includes "Karn Evil 9," "Hoedown," "Lucky Man," "Tarkus," "Fanfare for the Common Man," and many more.
