By 1952, pianist Lennie Tristano was starting to withdraw from public performances, spending most of his time teaching. This formerly unknown recording matches him with four of his best students: altoist Lee Konitz, tenor-saxophonist Warne Marsh, bassist Peter Ind and drummer Al Levitt. Together they explore six common chord changes, five of them given new titles. Although not essential, this music is quite enjoyable and a good example of Lennie Tristano's unique approach to jazz improvisation.

In Toronto the quintet performed brilliantly with asides for individual temperaments. And, fortunately, there was a tape machine present to record most that came to pass.

Although one of the world's best-kept secrets at the time, this was John Lennon's declaration of independence from the Beatles, the document of a concert appearance at Toronto's Rock and Roll Revival festival about a month after the conclusion of the Abbey Road sessions. Thrown together literally on the wing (they rehearsed only on the flight from England), the ad-hoc band consisting of Lennon, Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton on guitar, Klaus Voorman on bass, and Alan White on drums hit the stage to the surprise and delight of the thousands who packed Varsity Stadium…

The two giants of psychedelic music, the Airplane and the Dead, reaped maximum exposure in the press and on radio and TV during their 1967 Canadian visit. Their free performance at Toronto City Hall Square a week prior to their O‘Keefe concerts (July 31-5 August) would draw crowds estimated at from 10,000 to 40,000, figures exceeded only by the wordage covering the event in the three daily papers. Still without a hit single, but with a hot-selling debut album after two years on the road, the Dead would eventually become synonymous with the hippie spirituality for decades to come thanks to performances such as this, which catches the band in that early, experimental phase with the joyful improvisation that would soon become their trademark.

Although it may be difficult to believe now, in the late Sixties and early Seventies Chicago were something of a phenomenon. Their debut LP. b'Chicago Transit Authority', was certified platinum in the US, something no other CBS artist had ever achieved, even though the label boasted such names as Bob Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel. Their second, simply titled 'Chicago', repeated the commercial success of their first, and singles from both sold strongly either side of the Atlantic…
