, first published as simply , is the flagship Marvel Comics comic book series for the X-Men franchise. It features the adventures of the eponymous group of mutant superheroes as official canon. While hugely successful now, it took a number of years since the X-Men's first issue (cover dated September 1963) to become even a mild success. The series had been out of production since 1970 until interest was rekindled with 1975's and the debut of a new, international team. Under the guidance of writer Chris Claremont (whose 16-year stint began with August 1975's ), the series grew in popularity worldwide, eventually spawning a franchise with numerous spin-off "X-Books", including , the simply titled , and a number of prefixed titles such as and . Ever since Jeph Loeb presided over the near destruction of Marvel's Ultimate Comics brand with , Marvel has been slowly relaunching Ultimate titles in a bid to restore it to its former lofty, independent, continuity-free status. Thus we have and . Now we have this new bi-monthly ongoing title, written by--and I'm scratching my head--none other than Jeph Loeb. Well, perhaps it's for the better. Maybe he can make amends. Even though there's a kind of somehow-read-it-before patina to issue #1, it is, after all, just the first issue. What does grab you is the detailed, granular artwork by Art Adams. Hope he stays on. And hope Loeb stays clear of that big crossover event mindset prevalent among Marvel writers (I won't mention Bendis--oops!) and focus instead on Jimmy Hudson, or whoever may be the protagonists here. The title character Tom Strong is a "science hero", a term coined by Alan Moore to describe basically a superhero that has a science fiction explanation for his/her powers, and also as a nod to the classic pulp heroes of old, from which the series mainly draws inspiration.
