Vittorio is looking for a woman who matches his ideal. Through a classified ad he meets Sonia, a sweet, pleasant, intelligent girl. However, she weighs 125 pounds – which according to Vittorio is way too much. A goldsmith by trade, Vittorio is obsessed with the desire to shape Sonia's body and mind as does a fire with gold. Almost imperceptibly Sonia becomes a passive participant and the relationship grows into a reciprocal masochistic game. When the two lovers isolate themselves in a country house in the Veneto hills, they dangerously lose touch with reality and the rest of the world.

To sum it up simply, Singapore Sling is a work of extreme cinema; featuring all manner of things from sadomasochism to incest…but it's shot in a style reminiscent of the classic film noirs from the golden age of cinema. The two styles offset each other constantly, and this gives the film an extremely surreal atmosphere as well as a completely unique style that ensures Singapore Sling is nothing like any other film ever made. The film was made in Greece, which makes it almost unique in its own right as Greece isn't a country famous for film-making. The plot focuses on a detective who is looking for a girl named Laura. One night, he stumbles upon two women burying a body and we are introduced to what has to be one of the most "offbeat" mother and daughters in cinema. We then follow the daughter as she details the things her and her mother get up to, before the weary detective; who is given the name 'Singapore Sling', stumbles into the pair's home and ends up becoming 'involved' in more insane games.

Love turns out to be all in the family in this romantic comedy from France. When an elderly couple decides to marry, their families come together for a wedding banquet that turns into a raucous, wine-soaked celebration. Marthe (Marie-Christine Barrault) and Ludovic (Victor Lanoux) are distant cousins related by marriage who meet for the first time at the reception; they take an immediate liking to each other and resolve that they should see each other more often. Before long, they've become close friends, but their spouses begin to think there's more going on than just good conversation. However, the more people are convinced the two have become lovers, the more the idea of taking their friendship to the next level appeals to them. Marie-France Pisier has a memorably funny "suicide" scene as Ludovic's wife. Cousin Cousine was a surprise commercial success in the United States, where it received several Academy Award nominations and spawned an Americanized remake, Cousins (1989).

The story is centered on a microcosm of a post-apocalyptic society where food is so rare it's invaluable and is used as currency. The story centers on an apartment building with a delicatessen on the ground floor. The owner of the eatery also owns the apartment building and he is in need of a new maintenance man since the original "mysteriously" disappeared. A former clown applies for the job and the butcher's intent is to have him work for a little while and then serve him to quirky tenants who pay the butcher in, of course, grain. The clown and butcher's daughter fall in love and she tries to foil her father's plans by contacting the "troglodytes", a grain eating sub-group of society who live entirely underground. The "trogs" are possibly the most sensible of the lot, as they see food as food and not money.

Simone Signoret, Anton Walbrook, and Simone Simon lead a roundelay of French stars in Max Ophuls’s delightful, acerbic adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s controversial turn-of-the-century play Reigen. Soldiers, chambermaids, poets, prostitutes, aristocrats—all are on equal footing in this multicharacter merry-go-round of love and infidelity, directed with a sweeping gaiety as knowingly frivolous as it is enchanting, and shot with Ophuls’s trademark mellifluous cinematography.

Six superlative works from the internationally acclaimed Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski. Includes Kieslowski's narrative debut, The Scar (1976), a dramatic film about an earnest Communist Party member who's thrown into the center of a complicated political battle. Jerzy Stuhr stars in Camera Buff (1979), a biting political satire about a factory worker's fascination with an 8mm movie camera. The man's curious obsession leads to consequences both comedic and tragic. No End (1985) is a sublime blend of thematic elements both political and spiritual. The film tells the story of a young widow who expresses her love for her dead husband by taking up the cause of striking workers. Blind Chance (1987) is a narrative essay on chance and destiny about a middle-aged man who's allowed to sample three distinct outcomes that hinge upon whether he catches or misses a speeding train. A Short Film About Killing (1988) and A Short Film About Love (1988) are masterful feature-length spin-offs of episodes from The Decalogue. The former won the European Film Academy Award for "Best European Film" in 1988.
