Carl Jackson, an accomplished bluegrass instrumentalist and songwriter, was born September 18, 1953, in Louisville, MS. While playing in his father's bluegrass band at the age of 14, he was approached by Jim & Jesse to join their backing group, the Virginia Boys. He accepted and spent most of his teenage years playing banjo for Jim & Jesse and other groups at the Grand Ole Opry…

Meander Belt: Family, Loss, and Coming of Age in the Working-Class South (American Lives) by M. Randal O'Wain

In Meander Belt M. Randal O'Wain offers a reflection on how a working-class boy from Memphis, Tennessee, came to fall in love with language, reading, writing, and the larger world outside of the American South. This memoir examines what it means for the son of a carpenter to value mental rather than physical labor and what this does to his relationship with his family, whose livelihood and sensibility are decidedly blue collar. Straining the father-son bond further, O'Wain leaves home to find a life outside Memphis, roaming from place to place, finding odd jobs, and touring with his band.

Considering the amount of quality music the ad hoc Canadian singer/songwriter "supergroup" has released under the Blackie & the Rodeo Kings moniker – five albums, including a double from 1996-2007 – this 14-song, 55-minute set should have used the extra 20 minutes of its CD playing time to better advantage. The trio – Colin Linden, Tom Wilson, and Stephen Fearing, all solo artists with well-regarded catalogs of their own – began life by covering the songs of journeyman Canadian songwriter Willie P. Bennett before expanding into original material…

Farewell Tour is the first live album by American rock band The Doobie Brothers, released in 1983. It documents the group's 1982 Farewell Tour and is a double album set. By the early 1980s, the Doobie Brothers had evolved from the guitar-boogie sound under original band frontman Tom Johnston to a soulful keyboard-driven AOR sound under Michael McDonald. Despite the many personnel changes in the group, Patrick Simmons remained from the original incarnation of the group. In 1982, Simmons decided to retire from the group after years of constant touring and recording. When the band decided to break up in light of his impending departure, Simmons encouraged the group to make one last tour during the summer of 1982 as a way of thanking the group's loyal fanbase.

This six-disc set from Strawberry Records collects 12 of the great Mississippi-born musician's best-known albums from two important stages in his long career. Mose Allison's work for Atlantic with producers Nesuhi Ertegun and later Joel Dorn defined him as a downright virtuoso pianist in his own songs – as well as the many he covered – showcasing a signature style that perfectly wed blues, bop, and swing. His songs were delivered in a laconic Southern drawl; the originals offered hip, poetic, humorous, sometimes biting lyrics in insightful, often ironic commentaries on modern life, economics, and relationships, earning him the nickname "the Sage of Tippo." The first five discs contain two albums each, in chronological order: I Don't Worry About a Thing and Swingin' Machine (both 1962); The Word from Mose (1964); Wild Man on the Loose and Mose Alive! (1966); I've Been Doin' Some Thinkin' (1968); Hello There, Universe (1970); Western Man (1971); Mose in Your Ear and Your Mind Is on Vacation (1972). The final disc features his two outings for Bruce Lundvall's short-lived but important Elektra Musician label, 1982's Middle Class White Boy and 1983's live Lessons in Living. There are 104 tracks in all. Some of Allison's sidemen during the Atlantic/Elektra eras included now legendary jazz talent such as drummers Frankie Dunlop, Paul Motian, and Billy Cobham; saxophonists Pepper Adams, Seldon Powell, and Lou Donaldson; and bassists Red Mitchell, Bob Cranshaw, and Chuck Rainey.

For Bodies and Souls, the Manhattan Transfer almost completely abandons its roots in favor of a slick, pop/R&B direction on one side of the LP version while trying a few more interesting experiments with textures and styles on the other (the CD, of course, doesn't make such a sharp divide). Side one (entitled "Bodies") is relentless in its search for another Top Ten hit, enlisting the help of Rod Temperton – then riding high on his red-hot association with Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones – on two tracks, and Stevie Wonder's harmonica on Temperton's slick R&B/disco "Spice of Life." Meanwhile, side two (aka "Souls") pokes around the electronic world before falling back upon another ebullient collaboration with Jon Hendricks on Fletcher Henderson's "Down South Camp Meeting." Manhattan Transfer is so good at vocalese that you wonder why they bothered to chase hits in the manufactured, anonymous pop language of 1983.
