Odessey and Oracle was one of the flukiest (and best) albums of the 1960s, and one of the most enduring long players to come out of the entire British psychedelic boom, mixing trippy melodies, ornate choruses, and lush Mellotron sounds with a solid hard rock base…

It's almost criminal that The Zombies had disbanded after recording this wonderful album. Thanks God many people is (re)discovering the beautiful magic of O&O (and Zombies music in general). Great reissue by UK label Big Beat, both stereo and mono mixes sounds great (particulary I love the album in mono), the bonus tracks are really good (the cello part in 'A Rose For Emily' can bring tears to your eyes and the wild drumming in 'Time Of The Season just rocks) and Alec Palao provides complete notes. One of the best albums ever recorded.

This presents, in chronological sequence, both sides of all 14 of the Zombies' British singles. The Zombies were one of the most consistent British '60s bands, so it's no surprise that this is a great compilation, containing nothing mediocre and little that's even average. In addition to the three well-known hits "She's Not There," "Tell Her No," and "Time of the Season" (all present), there's an abundance of gems from B-sides and flop singles: "I Must Move," "Indication," "She's Coming Home," "Gotta Get a Hold of Myself," and "Beechwood Park" are just the very best of those. However, the absence of the great U.S.-only 1965 single "I Want You Back Again"/"I Remember When I Loved Her" and, to a lesser degree, some standout LP-only tracks (particularly "Changes" from Odessey & Oracle) prevents this from being the definitive single-disc best-of.

The Zombies are an English rock band. Formed in 1959 in St Albans and led by Rod Argent on piano and Colin Blunstone on vocals, the band scored US hits in the mid- and late-1960s with "She's Not There", "Tell Her No", and "Time of the Season". Their 1968 album Odessey and Oracle, comprising twelve songs by the group's principal songwriters, Argent and Chris White, is now considered one of the best of its time and is ranked 80 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The group formed in 1959 in St Albans, England, and gained their initial reputation playing the Old Verulamians Rugby Club in that city. The group was formed while the members were at school. Some sources state that Argent, Atkinson and Grundy were at St Albans School, while Blunstone and White were students at St Albans Boys' Grammar School (since renamed Verulam School). James' father was the original drummer. more…

This collection, remastered for SACD, covers the Zombies’ short and tasteful career, spanning their 1964-1967 years for Decca Records, and their single album, the classic Odessey & Oracle, for Epic Records in 1968. Two versions of “She’s Not There” are included here, one the so-called “stereo underdub” version that lacks the snappy drum overdub that gives the superior single version its crisp, edgy feel. There are also two mixes of “Time of the Season”, the familiar version and an alternate mix that features a little more organ in the verse sections.

At the end of the 70s, The Monochrome Set were part of the first wave of "post punk" bands. Right from the beginning, the band earned a solid reputation as purveyors of fine pop, gaining praise from the 80s contemporaries such as Morrissey and Edwyn Collins. Importantly, in later years this praise has continues with artists such as Franz Ferdinand, The Divine Comedy and Graham Coxon, all citing the band as a key influence on their own work. The Monochrome Set sound has often been described as "timeless", and that alone explains why, over the years, the band has continues gaining admirers.
