Love And Mayhem

LOVE + POP is a snapshot of a moment in not-so-far-away time; something fast, loud, moody and a little dangerous. It is, in some ways, classic Current Joys: full of wild ambition, sneaky hooks, and songs that move from concept to completion with prolific speed. But LOVE + POP also explodes myriad expectations with aggressive, deconstructed production, house music influence, and a guest appearance from Lil Yachty. It is not so much a twist as it is a unique multiverse identity for Current Joys, as Nick Rattigan’s set out to “capture this sonic moment and harken back to the way I first released music.”

In 1995 the band started writing and recording material for a fourth album, I'm Not Happy, Darren left by mutual agreement. Using their own studio and recording on ADAT Jon E. Love re-joined and the band produced and engineered its 4th release. Two side projects were also formed and started playing gigs. 'Skoe', with Skid, Jon E. and Joey and 'Sineaters' with Jizzy and Joey. At a Sineaters gig Jizzy was approached by Mayhem Records, who wanted to release I'm Not Happy. In December 1995 they played a two-week tour in Germany.

The lightning rod for Alabaster DePlume’s luminous follow up to the widely-acclaimed 2020 release To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1 was personal. “Someone was going through a thing,” says the Mancunian poet-performer. “I said, ‘go forward in the courage of your love’. And then I thought 'yeah, that's what I need to hear as well’.”
