Daniel Ash to released Freedom I Love, a limited edition compilation of solo material that also features three new tracks, including “You Unravel Me.” The Northampton-born Ash played guitar for the legendary Goth outfit Bauhaus and also fronted Tones On Tail as well as Love And Rockets. Not only is he one of the most innovative and gifted guitarists around, he’s one of the finest singer/songwriters on the planet. His songs effortlessly capture the beauty of the darkness and the mysterious shadows that glide through it. “Night is a time of rigor, but also of mercy…there are truths which one can see only when it’s dark,” Isaac Bashevis Singer once wrote. Ash’s songs have always been about these truths–his compositions are dark meditations on existence, the cosmos and the roads we have to travel to find the parts of ourselves we’ve left behind.

The Love Bunglers (2014)

The suppression of family history is the initial thread that ties together The Love Bunglers, featuring Hernandez's longtime Love and Rockets heroine Maggie. Because these secrets can't be dealt with openly, their lingering effect is even more powerful. But Maggie's ability to navigate and find meaning in her life - despite losing her culture, her brother, her profession, and her friends - is what's made her a compelling character. After a lifetime of losses, Maggie finds, in the second half, her longtime off and on lover, Ray Dominguez. Much like John Updike in his four Rabbitnovels, Jaime Hernandez has been following his longtime character Maggie around for several decades, all of which has seemed to be building towards this book in particular.

Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees is Dogstar's third studio album. Features "Everything Turns Around." First things first: There is no discussing Dogstar without talking about the reason the trio is famous—bassist Keanu Reeves. And there is no dismissing the fact that they traded off his Hollywood fame in the late 1990s; what other band toured and got the chance to open for Bowie at the Palladium (in 1995) despite not having a radio hit or even an American release for three years after that? They were the quintessential "big in Japan" band and broke up after their last 2002 show there. But in March 2023, Dogstar played a Napa, California, music festival and let it be known that they were back—and releasing their first album in 24 years, with producer Dave Trumfio (Wilco, OK Go) at the board. It's solid, cleanly produced and age-appropriate adult-contemporary, but maybe not the most exciting record you've heard this year.

Rock | 1cd | EAC Rip | Flac + Cue + Log | covers
Atlantic | 380Mb

During their late-'80s heyday, the Cult were known for their Doors-meets-Zeppelin-meets-Love and Rockets style, combining mysticism, solid three-chord guitar progressions, and goth rock stylings. In their 2001 incarnation, the Cult may be more accurately described as the Doors meets Zeppelin meets Tool. Guitarist Billy Duffy seems to have discovered distortion in the seven years since their last album. Not warm fuzz tones, but bone-crunching, mind-numbing distortion. While the music has changed, it still sounds like the Cult thanks to singer Ian Astbury's consistent wails and moans.
