Luxemburg

Though it has been recorded live in a concert performance, Franz Lehars successful operetta has plenty of theatrical presence. The cast is strong with to really good singers in the principal roles, Daniel Behle as Graf von Luxemburg and Camilla Nylund as Angèle Didier.

A Sloppy Piece of Work? This is how Franz Lehár described what was certainly his most successful work after The Merry Widow immediately after its composition. Today we know, however, that this was a gross misjudgment. Or if it was sloppy, then sloppy in a genial way. It bubbles over with catchy melodies, and dramaturgically it is in any case certainly the master's finest operetta: Der Graf von Luxemburg (The Count of Luxembourg). When the theater next-door to cpo in Osnabrück had the Graf on its program in 2011, it soon became clear that a stellar moment was involved here. The decision was quickly made to use this wonderful occasion for a production. The review of the operetta's premiere in Opernwelt shortly thereafter confirmed our decision: “The conductor Daniel Inbal passionately and elegantly brings out Lehár's intimate salon tone with the Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra, whose members play with the highest animation, carefully also in the postludes and transitional pieces, with what almost might be termed a fine operetta-philological feel. […] One feels empathy and great seriousness in the discerning treatment of the subject matter. Marco Vassalli, who is the spitting image of the young Johannes Heesters, fulfills the title hero's nonchalance requirement.”

La rivolta popolare del 9 novembre 1918 e la caduta della monarchia resero attuali in Germania i problemi di strategia rivoluzionaria che Rosa Luxemburg aveva lungamente discusso, e che divennero il banco di prova delle sue qualità di dirigente politico. Uscita dal carcere, Luxemburg assunse la direzione della Rote Fahne, il quotidiano della Lega Spartaco, e ne fece uno strumento al tempo stesso di agitazione e di formazione di idee. Il tema di fondo della battaglia in corso era sul carattere della rivoluzione: socialista o no? Per Luxemburg non vi erano dubbi: la guerra mondiale era stata lo sbocco necessario della politica imperialistica e l’imperialismo era l’espressione stessa del capitalismo giunto a un certo grado di sviluppo. L’alternativa perciò era fra una rivoluzione socialista o una continuazione della politica che avrebbe portato ad una dittatura e ad una nuova guerra mondiale. Nel Discorso sul programma Luxemburg traccia la linea teorica e di azione dei comunisti tedeschi, lasciando ai posteri al tempo stesso un testamento politico e una pietra angolare dello spontaneismo rivoluzionario.
