The late Esther Phillips (1935-1984) has often been considered one of the ‘unsung’ pioneers in the world of R&B, stretching back to the early ‘50s when as a child star working with famed bandleader Johnny Otis, she enjoyed a run of chart-topping singles at the age of 15, making her the youngest female artist to ever have an No. 1 R&B hit at the time. The Texas-born vocalist returned in 1962 with a soulful version of the country hit, ‘Release Me’ for Lenox Records, subsequently signing with Atlantic Records for whom she recorded a total of four full albums between 1964-1970 with a brief spell at Roulette Records in 1969.

Rhino Records asked producer Brian Ahern to select his favorite tracks from the Emmylou Harris albums he helmed – he produced her first 11 studio offerings for Reprise Records. That's quite a daunting task when you consider that some of those recordings were Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner, Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town, and Pieces of the Sky, just to name a few. But Ahern rose to the task and put together a solid, aesthetically perfect set here, highlighting many different aspects of Harris' career at the time: from her trademark, utterly pure singing voice, to her song selection, to the sound of her band and the studio she recorded in, this is a top-notch set from start to finish and serves as an excellent introduction to her early work for the newcomer…

It's a New Vibration: An Ultimate Anthology Review by Cub Koda
This two-disc, 50-track set (including previously unreleased tracks, singles, album tracks and radio promo spots) is just about everything you'll ever need on this ultra-successful hit making machine of the '60s and early '70s. All their hits are here in pristine sound, as well as shelved album tracks from their first album and others showing a band that grew in creative leaps and bounds within the confines of the pop charts. It's a long way from "Hanky Panky" by the original band in 1963 (also included is the seldom anthologized B-side instrumental, the storming "Thunderbolt") to 1971's "Draggin' the Line," but James' success was largely based on his reinventing the band's sound to keep pace with the changing times, and it's all here to savor. Great notes from Jeff Tamarkin complete this excellent package.
