“On the last album, there was too much of me.” That’s how Anthony Gonzalez – the sonic auteur behind that most sublime purveyor of symphonic-indie-electronic-dream pop, M83, describes the primary inspiration behind this album, released Mute. Highly anticipated, "Junk" is not just M83’s first studio artist album in half a decade; it’s also the follow-up to "Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming" - which upon release in 2011 put M83 in the direct current of the mainstream. So why would Gonzalez try to remove himself from its follow-up and supplant himself with the surprising likes of Beck and Steve Vai. Wait, Steve Vai? The legendary virtuoso guitar hero who defned an era? On a M83 album in 2016? In trying to “remove” his identifable musical presence, ironically Gonzalez may have made one of his most personal eforts yet in "Junk" and with no compromise.

At the beginning of the year, M83 announced a new album, Fantasy, the proper follow-up to 2016’s Junk. At the time, we heard “Oceans Niagara” from it, which made our list of the best songs of that week. The album is out in full on March 17, but today the Anthony Gonzalez-led project has shared what they’re calling the first chapter of the album, aka the first six tracks. That’s five more new M83 tracks than we had yesterday. “I wanted to be more present lyrically and vocally even if that was daunting at first,” Gonzalez said when he announced Fantasy. “I thought if I could achieve that, this album will be more personal than those that came before.”

M83 released soundtrack for the French horror film Knife + Heart, which doubles as a reunion for original members Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau, marking their first collaboration since 2003’s Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. M83 is frequently thought of as a solo effort by Gonzalez. However, Fromageau helped co-found the group in 2001 and remained active during their first few years before he eventually left to form his own band Team Ghost. The forthcoming work marks the French electropop duo’s first collaboration since Fromageau’s final record with the band in 2003, Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. It also follows up M83’s last studio album, 2016’s Junk, and serves as the project’s third soundtrack to date.
