A British dance-pop group which found fame thanks to the antics of androgynous frontman Pete Burns, Dead or Alive formed in Liverpool in 1980. Burns first surfaced three years prior in the Mystery Girls, later heading the proto-goth rockers Nightmares in Wax; he founded Dead or Alive with keyboardist Marty Healey, guitarist Mitch, bassist Sue James, and drummer Joe Musker, debuting in 1980 with the Ian Broudie-produced Doors soundalike "I'm Falling." "Number Eleven" followed, but just as the group was gaining momentum, they were swept aside by the emergence of the New Romantic movement, with Burns subsequently charging that fellow androgyne Boy George of Culture Club had merely stolen his outrageous image.

Another four-disc box that compiles extended and uncut versions of '80s singles, Back to the 80's: The Long Versions, Vol. 2 (from Sony Holland) might be worth it for those who still love mainstream pop from that bygone decade. Most '80s-themed compilations use truncated radio edit versions in order to cram as many songs as possible on one disc; this does just the opposite and therefore sticks out compared to the average various-artists collection. The Blue Nile's "Tinseltown in the Rain," Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme," Captain Sensible's "Wot," Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy," Donald Fagen's "I.G.Y.," and Thomas Dolby's "I Scare Myself" are just some of the songs presented in extended or full form here. Amazingly, all 17 minutes of Steve Miller Band's "Macho City" - a very uncharacteristic song from Miller, and an unlikely underground club hit in the U.S. are included.

The group performed many international hits including "You're a Woman", "Pretty Young Girl", "I Wanna Hear Your Heartbeat", and "Come Back and Stay". The group became massively popular in Eastern Europe, South America, and South Africa, with the band performing to sell-out crowds in Russia and Ukraine. In contrast, the group never charted in the UK, and their only charting U.S. singles were "Save Your Love" and "I Totally Miss You" (1993) which became successful chart hits.

F.R. David - The Wheel (2007)

General Info:
F.R.David (real name: Elli Robert Fitoussi, often also credited as Robert Fitoussie) is one of the now classic HI-ENERGY artists of early 80s. This French artist born in January 01, 1947 in Menzel Bourguiba (Tunis), and currently living in Paris (near St Germain des Prés) released many songs in pre-MODERN TALKING era. His personal "trademarks" are his sunglasses and his guitar (a white Fender Stratocaster). Many of us think of F.R. David as the singer of his smash hit Words, which sold 8 millions records accross the world, topped charts around Europe in late 1982 and hit No 2 in Britain in spring '83. Its eventual UK success was caused by its exposure on BBC TV's Top Of The Pops. The disc was featured on the first edition of a special Euro-slot incorporated in the program. The song was a catchy, slightly plaintive mid-tempo ballad sung in a slender, high-pitched voice. Indeed, such was Monsieur David's singing style that radio listeners all over Europe thought the single was by Madame David until seeing him. His voice resembles voice of Thomas Anders from late MODERN TALKING. Actually, F.R. David had several songs that became acclaimed hits. Another Mega Hit by him "I Need You" has been done in similar style as "Words". Speaking of "Words", this track was remixed in 1991 and released as MAXI-CD on MINT Records (Index # 879-701). This Maxi CD had three remixes with updated sound to Italian House. They were good but in my opinion the original sound was better. In 1997 "Words" was re-released in progressive genre.
