Trios: Sacred Thread is the third and final album in Charles Lloyd's Trio of Trios project in 2022. Its releases offer three different triads in concert settings, its players recruited from the saxophonist's vast stable of collaborators. Trios: Chapel, with guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan, appeared in June offering jazz and Latin standards and Lloyd compositions dating back to the early 1960s. Trios: Ocean, with guitarist Anthony Wilson and pianist Gerald Clayton, followed in September. Its program was composed of four originals offered as vehicles for lengthy improvisation.
Trios: Sacred Thread places the saxophonist/composer in the company of guitarist Julian Lage and Indian percussionist/vocalist Zakir Hussain…

For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and The London Boys Choir. This double-disc version showcases all of Phantom's songs, with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emily Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs–which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver's Carlotta.

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart, additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe and a libretto by Lloyd Webber and Stilgoe. Based on the 1910 French novel of the same name by Gaston Leroux, it tells the tragic story of a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, masked musical genius living in the subterranean labyrinth beneath the Paris Opéra House.

While not many on this side of the pond have noticed, Lloyd Cole, that smart, blackly humorous and self-deprecating songwriter has been assembling a nice catalog, chock-full of fine recordings. Luckily for us, his association with One Little Indian makes provisions for American releases for those who do understand that Cole is one of the most unique, tender, witty and biting songwriters out there, and he also writes a hell of a love song. Anti Depressant is the great double edge in Cole's catalog. In Cole's thinking, while it's true that an anti-depressant can make you feel better, the simple fact that you need one makes clear the appearance of depression. Many of these songs have that double edge in them.

Spirituality has always been at the center of Charles Lloyd's music. The other constant in the octogenarian saxophonist's work is his ability to stretch. Over his career, he's played blues and rock, had funky moments, and, of course, ranged across much of the jazz spectrum. He's added his horn to recordings and live performances by Cannonball Adderley, Joe Sample, The Beach Boys and The Doors. In 1973, after being influenced by the zeitgeist of Indian musicians Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha, Lloyd recorded Geeta, an album that mixed his brand of improvisational free jazz with traditional Indian music.
