This quote, which accompanies a vintage photograph of three African American women lifting their hands heavenward, is not only featured prominently in Put the Whole Armour On, a two-CD tribute to 1940s and 1950s female gospel artists, but it serves as an apt prelude to the collection. That is, notwithstanding the prominence of women in African American churches, most denominations did not allow women to become pastors. In response, some females became evangelists, saving souls through street corner oratory as well as gospel music. The 54 selections curated for this collection cover some of the most popular gospel singers of the golden era like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Clara Ward, and Mahalia Jackson. Included is Jackson’s initial and unsuccessful but plaintively rendered Apollo Records release “I’m Going to Tell God.” The package also introduces lesser-known figures such as Madam Ernestin Martin, Mary Frazier, and Mari Brown, whose lilting voice delicately delivers “Did You Stop to Pray This Morning” with R&B pioneers the Johnny Moore Trio.

Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights is the sixth full length album from The White Buffalo, singer-songwriter Jake Smith's solo act. The raw, country-grounded, rock-inflected sound that provided the perfect soundtrack for projects such as the television series Sons of Anarchy continues on this strong and versatile effort, which includes the ballad If I Lost My Eyes and the Western-reminiscent Robbery and Border Town / Bury Me in Baja.

"Supercharged" is the 8th album by American soul/R&B group Tavares, produced by David Foster, Benjamin Wright and Bobby Colomby (former drummer of the rock group Blood, Sweat & Tears), and released in 1980 on the Capitol label. Supercharged is similar in style to the group's previous album Madam Butterfly, and although not as highly regarded at its predecessor, critical reaction is generally positive. Lead single "Bad Times" reached the R&B top 10 and #47 on the pop chart, the group's first showing on that chart since "More Than a Woman" in 1977. Supercharged made #20 on the R&B chart and #75 on the pop chart.
