This is a unique blend of free jazz and electronica. Beginning with three live concerts, each recorded in four instrumental layers, some performances (notably the trumpet) were left intact, other layers were either re-performed or invented anew. Some layers migrated from one performance to another. Other completely new layers were made by canibalizing parts from previous works and reshaping them. This collection is an interesting blend of live concert recordings and studio mixes which makes for a haunting and ethereal soundscape.

Nearly 5 years since the release of his last album, 'Darling Darkness', Beerjacket returns with his most ambitious project to date. 'Silver Cords' is more than just a new Beerjacket album. Accompanying the 12 songs are a collection of 12 short stories; intertwined with the music, intended for consumption alongside it. Of the project Kelly says, “At some point in the writing of 'Silver Cords', I decided the record would live in a book and that each song would be accompanied by a short story inspired by its lyrics.” Kelly started writing the album in 2015 and its completion has taken 3 years. “Story by story, approximately once a month, the songs’ siblings entered the room. My imagination has superimposed details on the real-life buildings that inspired settings and, in some way, the stories play out there interminably now on three to five minute loops.”

The style in which the Finnish composer Sebastian Fagerlund composes might be described as ‘magic realism’, combining elements of surrealism with factual narrative. Drawing upon the symphony orchestra’s full spectrum of colours, the music reflects not only the traditions of impressionism, modernism and post-minimalism but also reveals the composer’s acute ear for other genres, from cool jazz to ambient music. An earlier recording of orchestral works by Sebastian Fagerlund was described in BBC Music Magazine as displaying 'boundless technical resource at the service of a considerable imagination'. These qualities, and his receptivity towards different musical traditions Fagerlund shares with Pekka Kuusisto, to whom the violin concerto Darkness in Light is dedicated. The title of the work is a subtle reference to a quote from author Haruki Murakami’s novella Firefly: ‘Death is not the opposite of life, but a part of it’. The disc closes with the orchestral work Ignite, composed for and performed here by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, under its chief conductor Hannu Lintu.

The General Assembly's music paints an engrossing and unsettling picture. Matt Wicking's songs use poetry and magic-realism, to chart the points where human and non-human nature connect, where the lines blur and dissolve. While the song-writing draws from the deep well of blues and folk storytelling, sonically it soars. Reverb-drenched guitars, synth and mellotron create swelling soundscapes.

Hilja is the sublimely half-there debut of dream pop from Glasgow-based Finnish artist Maria Rossi a.k.a. Cucina Povera. Taking her name from the southern Italian method of making-do in the kitchen, Cucina Povera works just as well to describe Rossi’s unusual, off-kilter mix of avant-garde abstraction, medieval-sounding folk and synthesised nocturnal atmospheres, which sounds to our lugs like one of the Fonal label’s folk sprites gone rogue in a parallel 4th world.

Sébastien Ricard plays the idealistic poet in La Bibliothèque-Interdite (The Forbidden Library), an intimate tango-opera written and composed by Denis Plante. The libretto expands on the memories of a fictional poet who, like his celebrated contemporaries Astor Piazzolla and Jorge Luis Borges, would have been a kind of outsider. He arrived in Buenos Aires in 1940, and with a mix of curiosity and amazement, there discovered the tango.

Hans Zimmer's melancholy yet romantic The House of the Spirits captures the magic realism of Isabel Allende's source novel with a clarity absent from the accompanying film adaptation. Accenting his brooding synthesizers and ghostly strings with elements of South American music, the composer brings to life the tragic downfall of an aristocratic Chilean family with uncommonly poignant precision. Zimmer confronts head-on the human suffering at the heart of the film, and at times his richly textured themes seem to marinate in sadness. He never stoops to heart-tugging pathos or histrionics, however, instead instilling The House of the Spirits with a dignity perfectly matched to its characters.

Is it possible that Tim Dwyer’s Off Land project, like fine wine, just keeps getting better with age? You bet. In fact, if there were any justice in the world, Off Land’s name would be up there in lights alongside colleagues Brennan, Global Communication, Eno, Froese, Orb, et al. The man’s surely paid his dues at this point, for his catalog is now one of formidable prowess; one thing he doesn’t lack is ingenuity, for there’s hardly a duff note amongst it. This latest missive for Carpe Sonum is a beautifully minted thing, its electronics cascading off a million reflective surfaces in starbursts of colors every bit as prismatic as the multi-layered synthesizer lines sporting them. Look no farther than the spiraling miasmatic sequencers of “Weathered Patterns”, which sets up its own ecosystem of immersive atmosphere, like riding abreast the silkiest little fluffy clouds imaginable. “Granular Shore” does it one better, a percolating analog bubblebath within which whispery, mellotron-like filters open to reveal all sorts of wondrous beings and their strangely shifting sounds dancing the light fantastic.
