Organ and tuba, not the most common pairing, but a very exciting soundscape with unexplored sound possibilities. Organist Magnus Moksnes Myhre and jazz tuba player Daniel Herskedal met for the first time as students at the music conservatory in Trondheim, and the duo have now created a completely new vibe with Desert Lighthouse. The sources of inspiration are many, and they meet in their common fascination with the oriental tonal language.
Magnus Lindberg burst onto the contemporary music scene in the 1980s with his early work Kraft (as in "power", and not the American food conglomerate and inventor of Velveeta cheese by-product substance), an avant-garde spectacular that took the "sound mass" procedures of Berio or Xenakis and wedded them to an explosive rhythmic energy. He's broadened his style since then, taking in tonal elements and even the occasional tune, but the rhythmic vitality remains, and his coloristic gifts, his ear for ever new and remarkable instrumental sound combinations, have only increased. Aura is a four-movement symphony as indescribable as it is a joy to hear. Dedicated to the memory of Lutoslawski, the piece shows its composer similarly possessed of a vibrant, communicative personal musical language. Although it plays continuously for about 37 minutes, newcomers to Lindberg's sound creations should start with the finale, a sort of dance that begins with simple tunefulness before finding itself in a sort of riotous minimalist hell. It's hugely fun, as is the entire work.
Magnus Öström and his band are finally back with a new album, his fourth to date. The album, A Room For Travellers, is both about the traveller’s journey through the world but equally about a journey inward, the journey within. In addition, the record is about the great importance of water, the ocean, to us.
Esoteric Antenna is please to announce the release of the new studio album by Nick Magnus, keyboard player in Steve Hackett’s band for five years, Nick was also a member of The Enid and his skill as an arranger and writer graced legendary Hackett albums such as "Spectral Mornings" and "Defector".
With his album "N’Monix", Nick Magnus has been joined in the studio by Steve Hackett, Rob Townsend and vocalists Pete Hicks, Tim Bowness (No-Man), Kate Faber, Tony Patterson, Andy Neve and James Reeves and lyricist Dick Foster to produce a collection of songs and music in the finest tradition of his past work with Steve Hackett. "N’Monix" is one of the outstanding Progressive Rock releases of 2014.
Nick Magnus is most known for his membership in Steve Hackett's backing band in the late 70's and early 80's where he played keyboards on such important albums as Spectral Mornings, Defector and Highly Strung. Interestingly, four out of six members of the Spectral Mornings and Defector line up is present on this very album, including Steve and John Hackett on guitar and flute respectively and vocalist Pete Hicks and, of course, Magnus himself. In fairness, all of these people were also involved in Magnus' previous solo effort Hexameron, but the present album is much more in the spirit of what they did on those classic Hackett albums (and much better too)…
Remastered from the original DAT mix tapes, this 2020 re-issue of Magnus' second album Inhaling Green (1999) includes two bonus tracks: a completely new recording of 'Night of the Condor' from the first album 'Straight On Til morning', and a brand new instrumental piece 'Lord Percy's Folly', co-written with Dick Foster exclusively for this release.
Having served his musical apprenticeship in the 70’s with the Symphonic rockers The Enid, Nick Magnus became Steve Hackett’s keyboard player during the guitarist’s rise to fame as a solo artist, following his departure from Genesis. Since the mid 90’s Nick has released a string of superbly crafted solo albums, one of which is ‘Inhaling Green’. Originally issued in 1999, this was Nick’s second album and it has now been given a long overdue and thoroughly well deserved makeover…
