The Mahler Academy Orchestra set itself the task of reconstructing this instrumentarium and researching how musicians of the time played it: ‘We were struck during our rehearsals by the incredibly distinctive characterisation of the woodwinds, the shattering blare of the brass, the perfect balance between the instruments, and the pure and warm sound of the strings…

It was bound to happen sooner or later: pretty much everything known by Mahler put into one box (16 cd's).EMI and DG–which also drew on the catalogues of Decca and Philips–have each produced complete-edition boxed sets to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Mahler's birth. One set seems like an inexhaustible treasure trove; the other one is more like a mere assemblage of all of Mahler's music.

Born in Venice in 1946, he studied music, medicine and archaeology. He qualified as a medical doctor but then trained as a conductor under Hans Swarowsky in Vienna. He was appointed a lecturer in contemporary and electronic music in Venice in 1972. His international musical career began with a variety of compositional activities (chamber and orchestral music, premiere of the opera Lou Salome in Munich in 1981). His conducting career took off in the mid-1970s with opera productions and performances at the major opera houses of the world including Vienna, London, New York, Milan, Florence, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Dresden. Sinopoli performed and recorded with the great orchestras of Europe and America and made guest appearances in Vienna with the Philharmonic and the State Opera, in Milan at La Scala and in Japan. From 1983 to 1987 he was principal conductor of the orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. From 1984 he was principal conductor, and from 1987 to 1994 music director, of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. He was a Bayreuth Festival conductor from 1985 to 2000. Giuseppe Sinopoli began working with the Dresden Staatskapelle in 1987, and was its principal conductor from 1992 to 2001. He was appointed designated GMD of the Saxonian State Opera from 2003. He made numerous award-winning recordings and toured Europe, North America and the Far East with the Staatskapelle. Giuseppe Sinopoli died in Berlin in 2001.

Recorded during two sold-out festival performances on 16 and 18 May, the album captures Mäkelä leading the Concertgebouw Orchestra, joined by five choirs – the Choeur de l'Orchestre de Paris, Netherlands Radio Choir, Laurens Symfonisch, and the Dutch National Children’s and Boys’ Choirs – and eight international soloists in Mahler's ‘Symphony of a Thousand’. The performance on 18 May, the anniversary of Mahler's death, was attended by his granddaughter, Marina Mahler.

For Gustav Mahler's 150th birthday, EMI has assembled a 16-disc box set of his complete works, including not only the ten symphonies, Das Lied von der Erde, and the song cycles, but also the early cantata, Das klagende Lied, and the extant movement from the Piano Quartet in A minor, two works which arguably can be called Mahler rarities. Having all these pieces together in one large collection is undeniably a great convenience, and many will consider buying this set not only for that reason, but also for the historic nature of the recordings. The roster of conductors features such legends as Sir John Barbirolli, Otto Klemperer, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Bruno Walter, George Szell, and Jascha Horenstein, along with later Mahlerians, Klaus Tennstedt, Sir Simon Rattle, and Carlo Maria Giulini, all of whom left remarkable recordings that still are essential listening.

"…[The Korngold] songs are quite wonderful, and we listeners should be grateful for Kirchschlager's persuasive advocacy….Pianist Helmut Deutsch is several notches above most accompanists, with his consideration of the soloist and his expressive nuances…" ~American Record Guide
