Thomas Zehetmair’s manually overwhelming and thought-provoking ECM recording of the complete sonatas for unaccompanied violin by Eugène Ysaÿe – released in 2004 to great critical acclaim – offered ample proof that alleged virtuoso pyrotechnics can be surprinsingly multi-faceted and complex when approached by a musician with a rare awareness of stylistic layers and expressive traditions. His (long deleted) Teldec version of the Capricci dating from the early nineties quickly won the status of a new benchmark recording.

This is not the kind of recording project consisting of the obligatory Brahms Trio Op. 40 in the company of two or three other much-recorded works. Presenting a 4-centuries double-disc album with just this First Volume, the artists explore a strikingly-interesting collection of diverse styles and genres, where even the sheer number of different nationalities of the composers (from 12 different countries) brings instant awe. Yes, the Brahms Horn Trio is included, as well as works by Mozart and Piazzolla (as the album's title proclaims), but we also hear trios by composers from the United States, Canada, England, France, Liechtenstein, Estonia, Romania, Bulgaria and Morocco. Presenting no less than 8 world-premiere recordings in just this Volume 1, the album brims with rarities and contrasts, showcasing many works written specifically for these artists.

Who was Thomas Dyck Ackland Tellefsen? Outside of his native Norway, Tellefsen is not a household name in the romantic piano literature. Listening to the Mazurkas that open this disc, the influence of Frederic Chopin is unmistakable, and for good reason. Tellefsen moved to Paris in his twenties, met the great Polish composer, and, the rest they say, is history. But rather than being solely derivative, Tellefsen’s piano works, and we get all fifty-three here in chronologic order, show progressive melodic development. No doubt we continue to hear the voice of the master but this is much as would be the case for those coming to early Mozart after hearing his musical predecessor and mentor, Haydn. What aids the cause for Tellefsen’s catalog is the committed performance by one of Norway’s preeminent pianists, Jorgen Larsen, who treats even the smallest work as a miniature masterpiece.

Patrick Wood - violin

Thomas Baltzar is a little-known German violinist and composer who is getting a well-deserved airing in this new premiere recording […] This CD represents his complete output of unaccompanied violin music, and is also the first-ever recording of this once-innovative music. What’s so striking about the pieces is their early use of polyphony, […] double-stops and scordatura […] British-Mexican violinist Patrick Wood thoughtfully plays the works. His tone is even, pure, and warm, and his intonation is spot-on. His light, gentle playing adds just the right shimmer to the simple beauty of each short piece. (Strings, July 2008)

Austrian Thomas Zehetmair recorded this series as soloist and director of the Philharmonia in 1990 and 1991 at Aldeburgh. As an exceptional Mozart interpreter he provides a compelling blend of artistry and elegance in performances that are admirable in all respects. The interpretations with their endearing understated quality are distinguished by a most agreeable blend of timbre, impeccable ensemble and clean and highly polished articulation. I was especially impressed by Zehetmair’s unforced selection of tempi and the amount of charm and poetry in evidence.

The exceptional status of Heidelbergs Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Thomas Fey is impressively documented by the twenty years and more of the ensembles existence. 'The orchestra plays in a relaxed manner, with virtuosity and an attractive, infectious spirit. It plunges into the music in a thoroughly adventurous mood, without ever losing its head.' (Fono Forum) Tours have taken the Heidelberger Sinfoniker to many European countries, South America and Japan. The orchestras repertoire now ranges beyond the Viennese Classical era into the later 19th century, with emphasis on German early Romantic works.
