Krystian Zimerman, Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra present Ludwig van Beethoven's 5 piano concertos. The exceptional Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman, together with Leonard Bernstein, presented an outstanding reference recording of Beethoven's Piano Concertos Nos 3, 4 and 5 more than 30 years ago (1989). At the time, both agreed on their commitment to music - in mind, heart and soul - which led to an extraordinary recording. Unfortunately, Bernstein died before the cycle was completed.

Known particularly for his orchestral output 16 symphonies and 21 concertos to date! the Finnish composer Kalevi Aho was recently described in Gramophone as having a strong claim to the title of greatest living symphonist. But as followers of the ongoing releases of his music on BIS will know, Aho has also composed a large number of works for smaller forces quartets and quintets, duos and solo pieces. On the present disc, the Finnish pianist Sonja Fräki presents his output for solo piano, comfortably fitting on one disc, but nevertheless spanning some 30 years of a long career.

This recording marks the beginning of a new series devoted to previously unrecorded chamber works by the Danish composer Vagn Holmboe (1909-96). The music was written from the 1950s to the 1980s and ranges wide, all the way from the playful to the serious. Holmboe's inexhaustible wealth of ideas and his mixture of lightness and ingenuity run through all the works. As does his 'metamorphosis' technique, which makes the music breathe and grow like the Nordic landscape of which Holmboe felt himself to be a part.

For a mild-mannered man whose music was always easy on the ear, Nat King Cole managed to be a figure of considerable controversy during his 30 years as a professional musician. From the late '40s to the mid-'60s, he was a massively successful pop singer who ranked with such contemporaries as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and Dean Martin. He shared with those peers a career that encompassed hit records, international touring, radio and television shows, and appearances in films.

GRAMOPHONE CRITICS' CHOICE 2011. BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE DISC OF THE MONTH. Inspired by the rural beauty of the surroundings at his country retreat in 1917, Edward Elgar embarked on the composition of some of his most inspired and imaginative chamber works. Both the String Quartet and the Piano Quintet are works of great depth and elegance. Their conservative style disregards the compositional trends of the time and displays an unabashed late-romanticism. Elgar wrote: ‘It is full of golden sounds and I like it. But you must not expect anything violently chromatic or cubist.’ The disc features sumptuous playing from the acclaimed Goldner String Quartet, who are joined by pianist Piers Lane for Elgar’s sublime Piano Quintet, a large-scale work of almost orchestral sonority. These masterpieces are accompanied by four previously unrecorded works for solo piano, the last of which was written by Elgar at the age of 72. They are intimate, charming rarities, superbly performed by Lane.

The Beatles’ revolver has become a new era album that uniquely identifies what it was. The music nature of the Beatles that extended the Oldies of the 50’s left the residue up to around “BEATLES FOR SALE”, the treatment of the world is idle, and actually “HELP” has “four people The idol “is given to the title. But the high artistic glimpse of that “HELP” was deepened with “RUBBER SOUL”, indicating that the Beatles were becoming an existence that does not fit within the idol category of one. Until then, I had been doing a tour in parallel with recording, but after stopping the tour in 1966, I will combine the styling of studio work and make ‘Sargent Peppers’. This album gets a high reputation both inside and outside, but it seems that “revolver” was the reason for its production. Indeed there are also reasons for time, but there are many songs that are difficult to reproduce on the stage with the technology at the time, without having played one song from the “revolver” at the stage. The “Paperback · Writer” which was the same period recording that was only released as a single was only played on the 1966 tour, “Rain” on the reverse side uses reverse rotation of the tape It was impossible. The Beatles must have perceived the real pleasure and entertainment of studio production with ‘revolver’. It should have thought that if it takes more time it will be able to create a more dense album. That was connected to Sargent Pepper’s discontinuance of the tour activity afterwards.
