Wild Man Dance marks Charles Lloyd's return to Blue Note after nearly 30 years. The work, a six-part suite, was commissioned by the Jazztopad Festival in Wrocĺaw, Poland in 2013 and premiered and was recorded there. The composer is accompanied by an international cast. The American rhythm section – pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Joe Sanders, and longtime drummer Eric Harland – are appended by Greek lyra player Sokratis Sinopoulos and Hungarian Miklos Lukacs on cimbalom. The music here seamlessly melds creative, modally influenced jazz and folk forms, a near classical sense of dynamics, and adventurous improvisation.

A tight quartet set from the great Lou Donaldson – cut in the early 80s and his first set for the Timeless label! Donaldson is of course unforgettable, always sounding his finest in quartet form – here doing his thing with passion with Herman Foster on piano, Geoff Fuller on bass and Victor Jones on drums. Titles include "Confirmation", "Whiskey Drinkin' Woman", "This Is Happiness", "Exactly Like You", "Don't Blame Me", "Melancholy Baby" and Donaldson's terrific centerpiece "Tracy".
Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. A real gem from the great Archie Shepp – an overlooked treasure from his years as a straight jazz musician – a time we come to appreciate more and more as the years go by! The Shepp heard here is one who's still got all the raw tone and bite of the old days, but also finds a way to swing things on a set of familiar standards – so that he's cutting these great raspy lines out of tunes you might already know – but which are taking on a whole new life in the process.
X-Legged Sally (XLS) is a Belgian avant-garde rock/jazz-band founded in 1988 by composer Peter Vermeersch, and disbanded in 1997. They were one of the first bands from Belgium to combine a set of very different musical styles (jazz, rock, improvisation and classical), becoming a starting point for the Belgian indie music scene that developed in the nineties. Initially, X-Legged Sally was formed to compose and perform the music Peter Vermeersch wrote for dance productions, such as Immer das Selbe Gelogen (Always the Same Lies), released as a live cd in 1991. Vermeersch' composing style was becoming too demanding for the constraints of sheet music such as was used in his earlier band Maximalist! From the beginning, improvisation played an important role in XLS' songs. The first X-Legged Sally concert took place in November 1988. Soon, XLS became a band in its own right, although there would be cooperations with dance ensembles throughout the existence of the group.
Khatsaturjan is a present Finnish Progressive rock band whose name is a tribute to the most famous classical composer of the Soviet Union. The musicians making-up this non-standard band are all talented multi-instrumentalists, singing and performing keyboards, on top of their main device (Bass, drums, guitar & cello). Released in 2006 by the Musea label, "Aramed Forces Of Simantipak" is their first official album. This is a rock symphony of 70 minutes, no less! And this is similar to the best albums of the like that were recorded in the Seventies, as far as fusion between classical music and rock is concerned. Even if its style can evoke that of Genesis, Yes or Gentle Giant for the complexity of the vocal parts, this symphony reveals especially an outstanding musical identity…
