Singer/songwriter/guitarist Marc Bolan was one of the major glam rock figures of the early '70s, especially in England. After releasing his debut solo single, "The Wizard," and its follow-ups, "The Third Degree" and "Hippy Gumbo," on Decca Records in the U.K. in 1965-1966, he joined the band John's Children in 1967. The same year, he and percussionist Steve Peregine Took formed Tyrannosaurus Rex, an acoustic duo. They made three albums, My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair but Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows (1968), Prophets, Seers and Sages, the Angels of the Ages (1968), and Unicorn (1969), then split, with Bolan retaining the band name and teaming up with Mickey Finn on the electric Beard of Stars (1970).

Between 1995 and 1997, Edsel released eight full-length CDs of Marc Bolan's previously unreleased demos, alternate takes, unused and abandoned songs and unfinished recordings. These CDs were deleted in 2001. Since then, copies of the rare original individual releases have changed hands for foolish amounts of money and sellers on Ebay have offered to pirate the entire set! Released in early 1975, BOLAN'S ZIP GUN appeared after T. Rex had been out of the limelight for a period of time. Rumors abounded about the supposed ill health of Marc Bolan, but beyond the rumors was the undeniable fact that T. Rex was no longer the sensation it had been in its early-'70s heyday. This two-disc 2002 edition is packaged in a digipak and plastic slipcase.Disc One includes 2 non-album single sides in addition to the original album. Disc two includes 19 "work in progress" versions and demos, which mirror the original album's running order.

By the mid-'70s, Marc Bolan's T. Rex had fallen on hard times. Bolan, who remained the essential element in the band, began experimenting with soul/funk sounds and collaborating with his wife, singer Gloria Jones, with mixed results. While 1976's FUTURISTIC DRAGON didn't hit the charts as hard as T. Rex's earlier classics ELECTRIC WARRIOR, SLIDER, and TANX had, it finds Bolan back on track. "New York City" turned out to be one of Bolan's final U.K. hits before his untimely death one year later. Other highlights include the orchestrated instrumental "Theme for a Dragon," and the upbeat power pop of "Chrome Sitar."

Initially a British folk-rock combo called Tyrannosaurus Rex fronted by guitarist/vocalist Marc Bolan (born Mark Feld). They became glam rock pioneers and shortened their name to T. Rex in 1970. They had a series of top ten hits in the UK, including four number one singles. In America, the group only had one major hit - "Bang a Gong (Get It On)". They retained a following until Marc Bolan's death in 1977.
