Margarita Höhenrieder’s career has led her to many of the world’s major music centres. She has played many concerts as soloist with conductors such as Kirill Petrenko, Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, James Levine, Riccardo Chailly, and Fabio Luisi, and with such orchestras as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Margarita Höhenrieder and the Bläsersolisten der Staatskapelle Dresden give concerts regularly and now produce recordings together.

For years, Margarita Höhenrieder was searching for the authentic sound of Frédéric Chopin's piano works. Which instrument of its time most convincingly reflected Chopin's music? Chopin himself had given the answer in 1831: "Pleyel's instruments are the nec plus ultra"! The choice for the recording therefore fell on a Pleyel fortepiano, built around 1855 in Paris and expertly restored using historical materials and methods. It is absolutely identical in construction to the instrument Chopin owned and thus represents an authentic sound testimony.

Albin Fries, who is also a passionate natural scientist, presents highlights of his Lied oeuvre on this CD with soprano Margarita Gritskova, who has been a member of the Vienna State Opera ensemble since 2012. These include songs that refer to nature, such as the "Seasons" cycle, which includes a setting of Uhland's famous poem "Fruhlingsglaube", as well as music on poems by Hermann Hesse, Stefan Zweig and Heinrich Seidel, songs dedicated to love, such as the cycle "Lieder nach Gedichten von Friedrich Ruckert op. 52" and settings of other poems by Adelbert von Chamisso and Clemens Brentano.

Albin Fries, der auch ein leidenschaftlicher Naturwissenschaftler ist, präsentiert auf dieser CD mit der Sopranistin Margarita Gritskova, die seit 2012 Ensemblemitglied der Wiener Staatsoper ist, Höhepunkte seines Liedschaffens. Dazu gehören Lieder mit Bezug zur Natur wie der Zyklus "Jahreszeiten", der eine Vertonung von Uhlands berühmtem Gedicht "Frühlingsglaube" enthält, sowie Musik auf Gedichte von Hermann Hesse, Stefan Zweig und Heinrich Seidel, Lieder, die der Liebe gewidmet sind, wie der Zyklus "Lieder nach Gedichten von Friedrich Rückert op. 52" und Vertonungen anderer Gedichte von Adelbert von Chamisso und Clemens Brentano. Die "Fünf letzten Lieder op. 53" nach Gedichten von Theodor Storm und Edith Haider, die Margarita Gritskova gewidmet sind, entstanden unter dem Eindruck des Entschlusses des Komponisten, mit dem Komponieren aufzuhören, was ihm aufgrund seines fortgeschrittenen Herzleidens unmöglich geworden war.
