Mari Poll is currently first concertmaster of the Estonian National Opera Orchestra and teaches at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. From 2015 to 2019 she was the second concertmaster of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and she has been invited to lead and co-lead orchestras such as the Stockholm Philharmonic, Bodo Sinfonietta, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra as well as Norrbotten NEO contemporary music ensemble.

The harpist Lily Laskine (1893-1988) was a popular and influential figure whose name was particularly closely identified with the Erato label, although she also recorded for EMI. The first woman to play in the orchestra of the Paris Opéra, she made her first recording for Erato – Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp with Jean-Pierre Rampal – in 1958, when she was already 65. She made her last Erato recording 23 years later. Her stereo remake of the Mozart concerto (again partnering with Rampal), recorded in 1963, remains an all-time classical bestseller in France.

Already in her day, María Antonia Vallejo Fernández, known as "La Caramba", was the object of fascination for her beauty, her enormous power of seduction, her mischievous witticisms, her grace in the art of singing and, finally, her unusual religious conversion and retirement at the height of her career. Her memory did not disappear after her death, but in the 19th and 20th centuries her figure, already in the realm of legend, was the subject of songs, books, zarzuelas and films. In this programme we propose to return to the sources that founded the myth of La Caramba, trying to understand a little more about this extraordinary woman.

In the framework of its partnership with the Académie of the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Alpha presents the recital of a Norwegian soprano already well known in opera houses and especially for her interpretations of Mozart heroines whom she embodies under the direction of the greatest conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt and René Jacobs. For this first recital, which she recorded with another eminent member of the Aix Académie, pianist Alphonse Cémin, she has chosen a programme combining her roots, with Grieg and Agathe Backer Grøndahl (1847-1907), pianist-composer born in 1847 of whom we discover a few songs, and those masters of the German Lied Richard Strauss et Hugo Wolf in whose songs her pure, luminous voice works wonders.

Joan Manén was an admired and prolific Catalan composer who wrote in all genres, from opera to transcriptions. He was also one of the leading violinists of his day and made the first recording of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Manén’s Violin Concerto No. 3 ‘Ibérico’ is a brilliantly written and unashamedly Romantic work that exudes Iberian vitality without recourse to Hispanic effects. Cast on a huge scale, the Symphony No. 2 ‘Ibérica’ calls for an exceptionally large orchestra, with music that is pastoral, Spanish-flavoured and, at times, solemn.

This is a new production from Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Il Tabarro is one of the three one-act operas that make up Giacomo Puccini’s Il Trittico. he element of Didier Gold’s Houppelande that most attracted Puccini was the opportunity to represent a river in music; it acts as a backdrop to the plot and determines its pace. The importance of this atmosphere is enormous, because it is linked to the mise en scène more tightly than is usual. The action takes place entirely on a barge on the Seine in Paris, which takes centre stage. The music describing the river uses a cyclic repetition of ostinato patterns, representing the monotonous flowing of the water, as inexorable as destiny and as regular as the flow of time. In the first part of Tabarro, the pulse of the river represents the life of the downtrodden in this world – longshoremen and boatmen. But even when it disappears, the musical identity between drama and location persists.
