Marie Jaëll probably represents the most authoritative and accomplished expression of the nineteenth century woman musician. In spite of her coming from the provinces and despite the heavy social restrictions imposed on artists of her gender, she nonetheless succeeded in being recognized as a virtuoso, a composer and as a teacher. Support from her husband – the Austrian pianist Alfred Jaëll – greatly contributed to the positive reception of her initial works for the piano, but it was by herself, armed with her talent and her resolve in the latter part of her life, that she faced up to the Parisian hurly-burly in which she proved herself to be one of its distinctive figures.

Women composers had great difficulty in making their voices heard and gaining recognition during their lifetimes. Even today, they are all too rarely heard in the concert hall or the opera house. That situation obviously cries out for a change in attitude, but then come the questions: all right, let’s programme women composers, but which ones, and which of their works? In this eight-CD set featuring several hundred performers, the Palazzetto Bru Zane offers its initial answer as far as nineteenth-century France is concerned. The selections range over chamber music, orchestral works, piano pieces and songs. They highlight twenty-one female creators, from already identified personalities like Hélène de Montgeroult, Louise Farrenc, Pauline Viardot, Marie Jaëll and Mel Bonis to such completely unknown figures as Charlotte Sohy, Madeleine Jaeger, Marthe Grumbach, Jeanne Danglas, Hedwige Chrétien and Madeleine Lemariey. From now on, there will be no excuse for ignoring Romantic women composers.

A newly remastered, richly documented set celebrating the art of a Spanish Beethoven specialist recorded at the peak of his powers in the late 1950s. Born in Zaragoza in 1905, Eduardo del Pueyo left Spain in 1920 to enter the Paris Conservatoire, but rejected the teaching of Marguerite Long outright. In thrall to Beethoven's genius in particular, he chose instead to become, as it were, a great-grand pupil of Franz Liszt through the example of Marie Jaëll, as passed down to Jeanne Bosch van's Gravemoer. In it's strength and sense of scale, Del Pueyo's playing as recorded here makes him a worthy inheritor of the Jaëll method. His playing is based on absolute respect for the musical text, shorn of false pathos but all the more sensitively expressive because the expressions flows from a lucid musical line.

Some musical objects resist scholarly classifications. Straddling two genres or requiring an unusual membership, they escape the boxes in which we like to lock each score before carefully storing it in a thematic catalogue. The same goes for mélodies composed by French people on foreign texts: should they be considered as French mélodies? Are they losing their French character? Are they even still mélodies or do they become lieder, songs, or any other form specific to the language used?

The Giardini Piano Quartet was born out of the bringing together of four artists who share great affinities: after more than ten years of musical and human complicity, Caroline Donin and Pauline Buet on the one hand, and Pascal Monlong and David Violi on the other, joined forces to concentrate on a repertoire that had long been close to their hearts. Beyond their love of music and their friendship, they approached this piano quartet repertoire with high standards and enthusiasm.
