Three years after a self-titled debut, the trio known as Aparis set out for its second of two albums for ECM. Much of the sweep of the first can be found slithering throughout Despite the fire-fighters’ efforts…, only here trumpeter Markus Stockhausen’s lines swim eel-like in an even deeper ocean of electronics, courtesy of brother Simon (who also plays soprano sax). Drummer Jo Thönes is gorgeously present at key moments, as in the high-octane intensity that concludes the opening track, “Sunrice.” Before this we are surrounded by dawn-drenched ruins.
Markus Stockhausen, Vangelis Katsoulis and Arild Andersen will release their new album ACROSS MOUNTAINS on February 4th, 2022 at o-tone music/Edel Kultur. German trumpeter Markus Stockhausen, Greek pianist Vangelis Katsoulis and Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen have known each other since 1996 when they met at a concert in Athens. ACROSS MOUNTAINS was founded in a time when traveling and concerts were impossible.
Trumpeter Markus Stockhausen follows, not leads, this haunting improvisation session with Gary Peacock on bass, Fabrizio Ottaviucci on piano, and Zoro Babel on drums. The colors are as rich as the names on the roster, and work their way through eight improvisatory spaces with varying degrees of clarity. “So Far,” for instance, begins like fingers groping along the wall of a pitch-dark room, awakening after an undisclosed period of unconsciousness.
Markus Stockhausen (born May 2, 1957) is a German trumpeter and composer. His recordings and performances have typically alternated between jazz and chamber or opera music, the latter often in collaboration with his father, composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. Born in Cologne, he is the son of composer Karlheinz Stockhausen. At age four he appeared as "child at play" in his father's theatre piece Originale. He received his first piano lessons at age six, and at age twelve he began to play the trumpet. He attended the music secondary school in Cologne. Concerts and festival appearances, also for the Goethe Institute, have taken him around the world.
here creates his own, convincing language by juxtaposing idioms from jazz, classical and contemporary music and free improvisation, to form fresh new, lively organisms.Symbiosis, the Concerto for Trumpet and Clarinet, is characterised by electrifying rhythms, scintillating harmonies, vibrant strings and the soaring virtuosity of the two soloists. It was written “to create a major work for Tara Bouman and me in which we can play as equally important soloists, and combine our different sound colours and playing techniques.”
