The three CDs that make up the Randy Weston Mosaic Select package comprise the complete sessions from six different albums, one of which was previously unreleased. Weston has had a long and varied career, and one that has established him in the consummate realm of piano soloists with his idiosyncratic, inclusive style. His deep jazz roots were accompanied, almost from the beginning, by the influences of Afro-Caribbean folk and the music of Asia, which he encountered during his tenure with the U.S. armed forces.

At the end of November the time has come again, completely in line with tradition, the Hitzone annual review will be published, 538 Hitzone - Best Of 2019. A double CD with only the biggest hits of 2019. Not just for the fans of the popular hits, 2019 was a good year. There was also a lot to enjoy for the true music lover. In addition to hits from Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, Marco Borsato, Davina Michelle and Mabel, 2019 is also the year of singer-songwriters such as Dermot Kennedy, Lewis Capaldi and Guy Sebastian. In addition to these new stars, we also saw many trusted names in the charts, such as Tiësto, P! Nk and Sam Smith.
One can fault this CD for having brief playing time (a dozen selections totaling less than 33 minutes) and for not including the alternate takes, but the music is beyond criticism. When trombonist J.J. Johnson burst on the scene in the mid-'40s, his speed, fluency and quick ideas put him at the top of his field, where he remained for over a half century. This 1992 CD has the trombonist's first three sessions as a leader, music that qualifies as classic bebop. Johnson is matched with either altoist Cecil Payne, baritonist Leo Parker or tenor great Sonny Rollins (on one of his first dates) in quintets that also include Bud Powell, Hank Jones or John Lewis on piano; Leonard Gaskin, Al Lucas or Gene Ramey on bass; and Max Roach or Shadow Wilson on drums…
