Peter Johannesson and Max Schultz, both self-taught musicians, started playing together in the mid 1980s when they toured with Herbie Hancock. Around this time Peter and Max performed a succession of concerts with another pianist, Bobo Stenson, who had been an idol of their youth. As they performed together they decided to record an album. Over the course of a couple of years they produced a series of new compositions from which they made a careful selection for the album. This was recorded in 2008 and has resulted in the present CD.

Jazzens traditioner i Sverige är inte en rätlinjig utvecklingskurva utan ett träd med ett rikt grenverk. Och en av de mer spännande tiderna är den då jazzens olika uttrycksformer föregick parallellt på småklubbar och krogar. Det var en kväll på 70-talet som jag dök in på Gamlingen som då var jazzklubben Stampens bakficka. Saxofonisten Bo Lindenstrand spelade med pianisten Lars Sjösten. Mitt i konserten öppnar sig då för mig de lyriska kvaliteterna i Bo Lindenstrands föreställningsvärld. Det finns en märklig mjukhet i hans improvisationer som sträcker sig mycket längre än Parkeridiomet, som ju ändå är hans klangbotten.

Not every singer who is relevant to vocal jazz is a rigid purist who completely rejects the influence of R&B, pop, and folk. There are some jazz-friendly singers who stray outside of jazz, which is what Swedish singer/songwriter Rigmor Gustafsson often does on Alone with You. Parts of this CD offer straight-ahead post-bop, while other parts are more pop-minded and/or R&B-ish and draw on influences ranging from Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro to Stevie Wonder.

Dave Wilczewski was an American saxophonist living in Stockholm. Working with many groups on the road as well as in the recording studio, Dave was one of the most outstanding and coveted jazzsoloists in Sweden. A name like B.B. Driftwood might lead you to assume that the bearer is a good old Southern bluesman, and this SACD's title wouldn't change that impression. But Driftwood, whose real name is Bengt Skoghoft, is about as far from the Southern US as could be. Yet, listening to Southward Bound, one hears echoes of the South and the style of another Opus 3 artist, Eric Bibb - not a bad starting point. But Driftwood is definitely his own man. He wrote all the songs on this album, and unlike Bibb he adds a slight rock 'n' roll edge to his basic blues base. He also throws in a dash of gospel, country, and R&B. Along with the catchy tunes, these help keep the music fresh and interesting.
