Blue sound. Deep focus. Encompassment. This is what awaits the listener on this recording. Not compression or complex harmonies, rather the sound characterizes this recording. The tone, the sound here is carried by the spirit of internalization. The silence between the notes connects. The album is a search for simplicity and the essential, which looks inward and decelerates the listener.

The seeds for the La De Das THE HAPPY PRINCE were sown very early on in 1967, long before Pete Townsend's TOMMY and Ray Davies' ARTHUR were even conceived, unfortunately it would be two years before it was finally released.Band members Bruce Howard and Trevor Wilson were talking of a rock opera as early as 1966 and started writing material early in 1967. The project was temporarily put on hold while the band left New Zealand in May '67 to hopefully conquer the Aussie scene. The La De Das eventually talked EMI Australia into recording THE HAPPY PRINCE album in January 1969. Finally released in April 1969 to unanimously excellent reviews, it was only a moderate seller at the time. This album is comprised of two versions of THE HAPPY PRINCE - one version is without Adrian Rawlins' narration in an attempt to show how the album might have sounded as a collection of songs.

The performers write: ‘Selecting the repertoire for our album Path to the Moon, we wanted to explore a number of possibilities for binding together a programme. To place different works alongside one another is a wonderful way of bringing out new and unusual qualities in each piece. William T. Horton’s fantastic image The Path to the Moon immediately inspired a flurry of ideas, including works on the subjects of both night and the moon, as well as pieces which invoke the exploratory nature of humankind’s voyage to the moon…'

For a pianist, Béla Bartók’s piano concertos are a central reserve of power. These works are worth the almost forty years that were spent wearing down the piano chair. These works are essential building blocks of ‘pianism’.

One of the most personal of the Brazilian drummers, Wilson das Neves has also been celebrated as a composer since 1997, having received the Sharp prize for his album O Som Sagrado de Wilson das Neves. Wilson das Neves took the drums at 14, initiated by Bituca, who, later, took him to the Flor do Ritmo school in the Carioca suburb Méier. At 21 das Neves debuted as a drummer at the Orquestra de Permínio Gonçalves. From 1957 to 1958 he backed up the pianist Carolina Cardoso de Meneses, and in 1958 he joined the Ubirajara Silva group. In 1959 he recorded for the first time as a session man. In that period he was a member of several groups like Steve Bernard's, the Orquestra de Astor Silva, the Conjunto de Ed Lincoln, the Orquestra da TV Globo do Rio de Janeiro and the Orquestra da TV Excelsior de São Paulo. In the decade of 1960 he became a busy session man and sideman, having worked for Copinha, Elza Soares, Elis Regina…

Laszlo Borbely tells us “For a pianist, Béla Bartók’s piano concertos are a central reserve of power. They are works that have been worth their weight in the piano stool for nearly forty years. These works are essential building blocks of ‘pianism’. To speak of Bartók, the composer (and thus this music), is an almost impossible undertaking. But why should I? Far more knowledgeable people than I have done it. What is the difficulty? Perhaps primarily because in his case, ‘great’, or ‘one of the greatest’, ‘greatest ever’,… categories all tend to dissipate.

The biggest undertaking of my life is the recording of these three Bartók masterpieces. I am grateful to fate and to pianist László Borbély (we were both students of Mariann Ábrahám, a few decades apart) for bringing this production together with his unstinting determination and unparalleled virtuosity. We can't be grateful enough to the excellent Savaria Symphony Orchestra, who played the seemingly unplayable parts. Conquering Bartók's Piano Concertos is an impossible task - we took the first steps boldly. - János Kovács
