Director Clare Peploe (wife of Bernardo Bertolucci) adapted this blend of noir mystery and magical realism from the story Miss Shumway Waves a Wand by James Hadley Chase. Bridget Fonda stars as Myra Shumway, an apprentice to a magician (Kenneth Mars) in 1952 Los Angeles. Myra is unhappily engaged to Cliff Wyatt (D.W. Moffett), a sleazy, Howard Hughes-like uranium heir who wants to run for president. After her fiancée accidentally kills her boss, Myra flees to Mexico in search of a renowned female shaman who may be able to teach her the secrets of magic. Wyatt sends an investigator, Alex Ross (Russell Crowe), to find Myra and bring her back. A former photojournalist traumatized by the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Ross finds Myra but falls for her and joins her on the quest to find the medicine woman, as does Doc Ansell (Jim Broadbent), an eccentric patent medicine salesman seeking an ancient Mayan cure for constipation. During the journey, a series of mystical events occur, including levitation during sex, a dog with the power of speech, a human being laying a blue egg, and the transformation of an assailant into a sausage.

Eric Bishop is a football fanatic postman whose life is descending into crisis. Looking after his granddaughter is bringing him into contact with his ex-wife, Lily, who he abandoned after the birth of their child. At the same time, his son Ryan is hiding a gun under the floorboards of his bedroom for a gangster. At his weakest moments Bishop considers suicide. But after a short meditation session with fellow postmen in his room, hallucinations bring forth visits from his footballing hero, the famously philosophical Eric Cantona, who gives him advice. His relationship with Lily improves dramatically. Bishop finds the gun and confronts his son. Ryan admits to his involvement with gangsters, and Bishop takes the gun back to the gangster. He is forced to keep it himself, however, when a Rottweiler is set on him in his car…

Eric Bishop est postier à Manchester et fan de football, comme tous ses collègues. Les deux adolescents de sa deuxième femme, dont il est séparé, lui rendent la vie impossible à la maison : il découvre notamment que le plus âgé fréquente des gangsters et cache une arme dans sa chambre. C'est en gardant sa petite-fille qu'il reprend contact avec sa première femme Lily, qu'il avait abandonnée, et replonge dans son passé douloureux. Lors de ses moments de détresse, il a des pensées suicidaires. Ses hallucinations lui valent la visite de son héros, le footballeur Éric Cantona, philosophe à ses heures, qui l'aidera à reprendre sa vie en main.

In the fall of 1954, the Kurtzmans, a Jewish family, live in Forest Park, a suburban neighborhood in the northwest section of Baltimore. At the beginning of the film, Nate, the father, runs a burlesque theatre, and engages in a community numbers racket. His wife Ada stays home and takes care of the household. Van, the older son, attends the University of Baltimore, while Ben is finishing his final year in high school. Ben meets Sylvia, an African-American girl, who begins attending his school after the district has been integrated. Ben immediately start to develop feelings towards Sylvia, and introduces himself. The two become close based on a mutual love for Little Richard, James Brown, jazz musicians, and black comedians. Sylvia's father, an affluent doctor, disapproves of their relationship and forbids them to see one another. On Halloween, Ben dresses up as Adolf Hitler. This offends his parents greatly. Van and his friends head over to a party in a predominantly bourgeois, gentile section of Baltimore. Van is attracted to a mysterious blonde woman. A fight between one of Van's buddies and a gentile erupts and Trey, one of the party-goers, drunkenly crashes his car into the house. Van must leave the mystery woman.

Baltimore, 1954. L'Amérique entre dans une nouvelle ère et la famille Kurtzman va connaître, elle aussi, de nombreux hangements. Ben, le fils cadet, qui a toujours vécu dans un milieu et un quartier exclusivement juifs, voit s'ouvrir de nouveaux horizons en fréquentant Sylvia, la seule élève noire de son lycée. Mais le père de celle-ci, un médecin bourgeois et soupçonneux, met rapidement le hola à cette relation. De son côté, Van, le frère de Ben, tombe amoureux de la belle et aristocratique Dubbie. Quant à leur père, il s'efforce de sauver son petit music-hall.
