Most 1960s garage rock obsessives collect singles rather than albums for a good reason: While plenty of snarling teenagers could come up with two decent songs at a stretch, a precious few seemed able to brainstorm a dozen tunes without reaching to the bottom of the barrel or resorting to covers of other people's hits. But there were exceptions to this rule, among them the Sonics, the Litter, and, especially, the Remains, who never enjoyed much success on the national charts but were fabled heroes in their home town of Boston. The Remains' 1966 album for Epic is a classic, packed with great songs from singer/guitarist Barry Tashian, bassist Vern Miller, and pianist Bill Briggs, and boasting exciting, fiery performances, and if the full firepower of their legendary live shows didn't always come through on tape…

John Lee Hooker was the king of the endless boogie, a globally cherished bluesman whose droning, hypnotic, one-chord grooves were driving, primitive, and timeless. During a 50-year career, he melded regional sounds from the Delta, Detroit, and Chicago in a trademark, oft-imitated approach. From the late 1940s until 1969, he cut more than 100 singles for labels such as Modern, Chess, Federal, Atco, and Vee-Jay, including hits such as "I'm in the Mood," "Hobo Blues," "Boogie Chillen," "Crawling Kingsnake," and "Boom Boom." In 1966 he resurrected and reinvented the '50s R&B hit "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" and made it his own.

Over the last couple of years, soloists in this Gospel music arena have absolutely been killing it. In 2017, two of the industry’s most critically acclaimed releases came from soloists (i.e. Michael English’s Love Is the Golden Rule and Joseph Habedank’s Resurrection), and many more soloists of the last few years have dominated the Southern Gospel charts (see Misty Freeman, Amber Nelon Thompson, Steve Ladd, Chris Freeman, and more).

This is Roine Stolt's (The Flower Kings, Transatlantic, Agents of Mercy, Kaipa) double solo CD that’s rootsy and bluesy and very cool. Featuring some lead and backing vocals from Neal Morse, this album has a killer band and is trademark, vintage Roine in all his creative brilliance. This is what Roine says about it: “For a long time I've wanted to do something that is connected with my roots and the way I heard music in my teens. Even the lyrics on this album reflect a spirit that was around at the time, slightly political and as true today as back then. I also wanted to do an album that focus heavily on my guitar playing and in particular the more 60-70's style blues playing with a sound that is closer to clean tube amp than modern overdriven rectified. I started this out as a blues album ,then along the way it became my "postpsycedelicblues" album, but now I've included so many of my early influences so I guess it ended up being just… a music album”.

In the final days of World War II in Europe, Georgians serving in the Wehrmacht on Texel island off the Dutch coast rose up and slaughtered their German masters. Hitler ordered the island to be retaken and fighting continued for weeks, well after the war's end.
