The records defy categorization. Rock and Roll die hards proclaim Moore "The Father of Rockabilly piano" with legends such as The Killer himself, Jerry Lee Lewis, naming Moore as an early idol. Fans of country music admire Moore's crisp, clear vocal delivery, rivaling those 50s superstars from Nashville like Webb Pierce and Faron Young (although Moore insists that his band was not country). They compare the rhythm of his small band to those of Western swing king Bob Wills, who in the early 50s recorded some of 'his' finest work for MGM. But despite these accolades from his peers and fans all overthe world, Merrill Everett Moore remains an unknown; unacknowledged for his contributions to the West Coast music scene and ignored by the Nashville establishment.

The subtitle "The Original Rock 'n' Roll Recordings 1950-1960" further clarifies the contents of this double-CD compilation tightly packed with 63 predominantly instrumental tunes from the early days of rock & roll. Most of the usual suspects are here, such as "Tequila," "Rebel Rouser," "Rumble," and "Honky Tonk," but it's the rest of this set that is such a revelation. Obscure choices from legends such as Chuck Berry, Bill Haley & the Comets, and Fats Domino share space with less familiar names such as Kid King's Combo, Lawson Haggart Rockin' Band, Dave Appell & the Applejacks, and Merrill Moore, best known only by rabid fans of the genre. The strict chronological time frame precludes any surf, which generally came to prominence after 1960, so much of this stays in the blues, country, and R&B veins. There are a few obvious omissions such as Santo & Johnny's classic "Sleep Walk" but that doesn't detract from the wealth of rare and seldom-anthologized songs that make this such an enjoyable spin for enthusiasts of the time period.

This is the eighth (and last) volume in a series of double-disc anthologies from French label Fremeaux Records that chronicles the years that led up to the birth of rock & roll. While the magic year of 1954 is usually accepted as the dawn of the rock & roll age, the whole matter has always generated a good deal of debate, and this installment in the Fremeaux series only muddies the waters, since the year it covers, 1952, shows things rocking along pretty well. One could argue that some of the tracks here, like Wally Mercer's wonderful "Rock Around the Clock," are really just speeded-up R&B, and technically, that's probably so, but there's no denying that something resembling the rock & roll attitude is already in full swing in 1952…

Conceived as music for listening behind the wheel or at home, this triple album echoes the “American Way of Life” back in the days when the automobile was a striking symbol. This anthology featuring rock, jazz, western swing, blues and country music is a landmark audio-collection illustrating the car-myth in American popular music. The 28-page booklet contains detailed notes by Bruno Blum, and these remarkable titles were all chosen for their quality: compositions, lyrics, performance… and, wherever possible, great sound, the kind you need wherever you take the music.

The Tin Man Was a Dreamer Review by Bruce Eder
Nicky Hopkins' finest solo album, the memorably titled The Tin Man Was A Dreamer is a solid piece of engagingly edgy pop-rock – picture Elton John's early '70s work with more variety, a few rough edges, and a bit less ego. As one would expect, Hopkins' piano playing (augmented by the organ in spots) dominates most of the songs, but there's ample room for strong contributions from George Harrison (working as "George O'Hara") on lead and slide guitar on four of the tracks, and Mick Taylor on lead and acoustic guitars on four tracks; the rest of the band includes Klaus Voormann on bass and Bobby Keys on sax, as well as future Tubes alumnus Prairie Prince on drums.
