Meyerbeer is best known for his spectacular operas, such as the Italian Semiramide and Il Crociato in Egitto that won him great popularity. Less well-known are his songs, of which 26 were presented in the first volume of this series (NX 2367). In this second volume the music covers a substantial period of the composer’s life with settings in French, German and Italian that explore the joys and pain of love, Arcadian idylls, and religious themes. Four of the songs are heard in world première recordings.

The grand opera Die Hugenotten was one of the greatest operatic successes of the 19th century, and its creator was hailed as the foremost composer of his time. Yet today, he is largely forgotten by the opera-going public and his works lie gathering dust in opera house repertories around the world.

I am new to Meyerbeer having recently seen a poor copy of Robert le Diable and bought L'Africaine - two grand operas that impressed me greatly.
Dinorah, to me, is not a grand opera: it is not a comedy or a fantasy (such as The Magic Flute), but it has touches of all these. What it is, is entertaining. The three lead singers are excellent, the production is traditional and though the short story takes a long time to tell ( a la Wagner ) it is very easy to watch. I will certainly watch it a number of times, and I feel sure will find something new each time… By Perry Sole (New Plymouth)

Recommended: not so much for the performance or even the work as for the experience. And even that is not necessarily something you will want to repeat very often. The point is that it may be now or never. Robert le diable, received triumphantly in Paris at its premiere in 1831, took centre- stage in the opera houses of Europe for two or three decades: a pantechnicon of an opera I was about to call it, and then thought to see what the dictionary had to say, finding there ‘the name of a bazaar of all kinds of artistic work’ – and the date 1830!

To many, Diana Damrau is the complete coloratura soprano: with a beautiful voice and astounding technique that allow her to reach the highest notes with seeming ease, she has a keen sense for drama, giving her operatic characters real emotions and total believability. She also exudes a likeable quality on-stage, and, her many fans eagerly note, sex appeal. While she is perhaps best known for roles in Mozart and Richard Strauss operas, her repertory takes in operas by Vivaldi, Beethoven, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Wagner, and many others.

This is my favorite Sutherland collection. It has so much from so many periods. The bits from The French Opera Gala are beyond belief. It is some of the best coloratura she ever did and was recorded at a great part of her career. Both the Wagner and the Mozart discs were recorded when she was close to 60, which doesn't mean that much with Sutherland. Still it would have been great to have heard the Wagner recorded a decade earlier when she recorded the Turandot. She would have been better at Wagner than anyone around today. Not Nilsson or Flagstad's equal, but better by far than Voigt, who isn't bad. On the Mozart bits, a couple sound old, but the rest are as good a performance of Mozart as you are ever going to hear. Many people only like the young Sutherland, but I like the color and richness her voice developed with age.

After her triumph with the album Offenbach Colorature (ALPHA437), Jodie Devos has chosen to follow in the footsteps of one of her compatriots, the Belgian coloratura soprano Marie Cabel (1827 -1885), who at the age of twenty-six scored a phenomenal success in Adolphe Adam’s opéracomique Le Bijou perdu, which she premiered in Paris. She then took on a more dramatic role in Halévy’s Jaguarita l’Indienne, whose great Invocation with chorus (‘À moi ma cohorte!’) again hit the bullseye in a run of 124 performances over just a few months.
