In 1980, two Cork outsiders, Cathal Coughlan and Sean O’Hagan, met at a New Year's Eve party. Bonding over music, a friendship and songwriting partnership was ignited; the band they formed, Microdisney, was one of the best bands of the 1980s that you’ve probably never heard. Mixing Sean’s stunning melodic arrangements with Cathal’s poetic, angry lyrics, they recorded three brilliant LPs, gained critical adulation and an obsessive cult following. But a hit single eluded them, as did radio play and LP sales. By 1988, frustrated by their lack of progress, the band crashed and burned, leaving a trail of acrimony and broken friendships.

Like many bands, who may otherwise have gone unrecognised, they were given a wider audience by BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel. They recorded for Kabuki, Rough Trade and Virgin records. Albums included the early compilation We Hate You South African Bastards! (later renamed "Love Your Enemies"), Everybody Is Fantastic and The Clock Comes Down The Stairs. After signing to Virgin they released two albums Crooked Mile and 39 Minutes. Their second single, 1983's `Pink Skinned Man' is a superb indie record, produced by Dave Feeley. They began recording in Cork, producing a muted atmospheric sound. After their initial Peel sessions and meeting with John Porter (also of the Smiths) their sound became more commercial and chart orientated. `Town to Town' (1985) was a fine rock-along sing song but Microdisney's 1987 single `Singer's Hampstead Home' is often described as an attack on Boy George (of Culture Club fame).

A landmark early effort from pop genius Sean O'Hagan – one of his early collaborations with Cathal Coughlan in the group Microdisney, an outfit that never charted big at the time, but which has been the font from which so much important Brit pop of the past 20 years has sprung! There's a rough brilliance going on here – an attempt to create the smoother, more straightforward pop of the Prefab Sprout camp – but with an edge that would thankfully emerge even more strongly on O'Hagan's later work. Tunes are simple, sweet, and catchy.

The High Llamas are a London-based musical group, formed by the Irish guitarist and songwriter Sean O'Hagan after the demise of his group Microdisney. The High Llamas' output (including the eponymous debut album, technically credited to "Sean O'Hagan") showed influences including pre-1950s American pop and folk, Brazilian jazz and bossa nova, film composers of the 1960s, and 1990s European electronic music. O'Hagan's work most frequently included references to Brian Wilson's psychedelic period and/or kitsch lounge revival. Collection includes: 'Beet Maize & Corn' (2003); 'Can Cladders' (2007); 'Talahomi Way' (2011).

Depending on the tracks, for fans of New Order, or for fans of the Pale Fountains, Microdisney, Prefab Sprout and Aztec Camera. "A document of mid-eighties Britain from it's pokiest cul-de-sac."
If you were born in the mid 60s in Britain and you weren't in a band as a teenager then you got it WRONG. What have you got to look back on? A few mangy photos? We that tuned our trannies to Peel and picked up guitars have OUR late teens soundtracked forever. We watched T-Rex on 'Top of the Pops', got intoxicated by punk and inspired by DIY techniques. We were radicalised by the Tory Government's class war. Pop music was a cultural signifier in the late 70s and early 80s, it was our way to escape the squares.

After coming to prominence as the frontman of the Mercury Prize-winning Klaxons, recording with Arctic Monkeys, and crafting his Shock Machine project, James Righton now releases his debut solo album The Performer. The Performer stands in stark contrast to the electro-hedonism of Righton’s work with Klaxons. Instead, it spins through various points from 1970 onwards. It touches on the suave art-lounge of Roxy Music, the jangly grooves of R.E.M., the sumptuous psychedelia of latter day Beach Boys, and the songwriting gift of Nick Lowe. In short, it uses classic elements as the groundwork for something which feels a natural fit for 2019.

Following the success of the three-disc compilation, ‘The Sun Shines Here’ (which documented the roots of Indie Pop from 1980-84), the prequel to C86, C85 combines “name” bands with many obscurities making their debut on CD. Several acts on C85 would eventually feature on that NME’s C86 collection: Primal Scream, The Wedding Present, the Mighty Lemon Drops, etc, who all had singles released in 1985.
