In between stints recording for the Riverside or Fantasy labels, Bill Evans worked for the Verve label and produced music that was either more challenging or, in this case, mellower. This collection emphasizes the more romantic side of the pianist, in either trio contexts or with a lone additional accompanist, primarily guitarist Jim Hall. There is a single orchestrated selection, Evans' own "Time Remembered," and the rest are small-ensemble ballad standards that stand the test of time. Only one of the other remaining numbers, "Turn Out the Stars," is composed by Evans, and a bit of Bach is included. This is perfect after-hours seduction or dinner music that fans of Evans can easily appreciate, while others can just play the CD and let the gentle evening unfold.

"Midnight Special" is the lesser-known sister album of Jimmy Smith's monumental "Back at the Chicken Shack." The "Midnight Special" album has exactly the same sound (lineup) and the songs on "Midnight Special" seem to pick up right where "Chicken Shack" left off. ~ Amazon

Recently saw the Dexy's described as one hit wonders. Well, if 'Come on Eileen' is all you know this will show you how much you're missing. Don't expect the Celtic pop of 'Come On Eileen' though, their next best know song 'Geno' is far more representative of The Dexy's 80's update of righteous soul music - tight and punchy with the brass section upping the excitement. Best of all are Kevin Rowland's lyrics when you can make them out, and even when you can't his voice conveys the passion and drive that propelled the band; outsiders who knew their way was the right one. "Let's Get the Straight", "Show Me", "Celtic Soul Brothers", "Liars A to E", "Geno", "Breakin' Down the Walls of Heartache", "Dance Stance", "Plan B" and "Keep It" all easily surpass "Come on Eileen". The Dexy's deserve to be remembered for more than that, and their best efforts laid down a blue print that sadly too few have followed.

THE COMPLETE BILL EVANS ON VERVE is an 18-disc, 269-track box set featuring every track that Bill Evans recorded for Verve between 1962 and 1969, including 98 previously-unreleased tracks. It includes a 160-page, full-color book. THE COMPLETE BILL EVANS ON VERVE was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package - Boxed and for Best Historical Album. The 18 CDs in this exhaustive set provide a comprehensive picture of Bill Evans from 1962 to 1969, a period when the pianist was both consolidating his fame and sometimes taking his music into untested waters, from unaccompanied piano to symphony orchestra. His work with multitracked solo piano, originally released as Conversations with Myself and the later Further Conversations with Myself, was the most remarkable new format for his introspective music. It gave Evans a way to be all the pianists he could be at once–combining densely chordal, harmonically oblique parts with surprising, rhythmic punctuation and darting, exploratory runs.

While its sheer bulk negates its interest to a general audience, The Complete Bill Evans on Verve is an essential library piece for any serious jazz fan or historian. Spanning 18 CDs, 269 tracks and 21 hours, the box set includes all of Evans' recordings for the label between 1962 and 1969, including 19 albums, two previously unreleased albums and 98 previously unreleased tracks. During these years, the pianist made some of his greatest music, including his legendary Village Vanguard sessions, and the set charts all of his changes, as he plays with his trio and as a solo artist, as well as a rare session with a rhythm quartet and strings. While the set itself could be a little more user-friendly – it's encased in a steel box, with a 160-page booklet and an 18-disc fanpack on separate shelves – the music itself is nearly flawless and nearly essential for most serious jazz fans.

During an 18-year period, fan Mike Harris went to the Village Vanguard whenever pianist Bill Evans appeared and privately taped his performances. More than a decade after Evans' death, Harris made all the proper legal arrangements and producer Orrin Keepnews released music from 26 different occasions on this eight-CD box set, 104 selections in all. With the exception of the first date (and to a lesser extent the last one), the recording quality is surprisingly good, making this a real bonanza for Bill Evans' other fans.
