Lennon didn't leave politics behind - he just tempered his opinions with humor on songs like "Bring on the Lucie (Freda Peeple)," which happened to undercut the intention of the song. It also indicated the confusion that lies at the heart of the album. Lennon doesn't know which way to go, so he tries everything. There are lovely ballads like "Out of the Blue" and "One Day (At a Time)," forced, ham-fisted rockers like "Meat City" and "Tight A$," sweeping Spectoresque pop on "Mind Games," and many mid-tempo, indistinguishable pop/rockers. While the best numbers are among Lennon's finest, there's only a handful of them, and the remainder of the record is simply pleasant…

Mind Games was meant to be a return to form for John Lennon, after an instantly dated protest album that felt didactic and cold. He seemed to be back on track with its opening Top 20 hit title song. But the rest of Mind Games could be a strangely ruminative and often mid-tempo, with a shaggy studio approach. Mind Games: The Ultimate Collection makes it clear who fans should blame: The producer. After three straight projects with co-producers Phil Spector and Yoko Ono, Lennon took over those duties. He clearly couldn't place enough distance between himself and the material to make the best choices for these songs. An outside voice might have encouraged him to continue work on some tracks, or to toss one or two aside.

John Lennon - Mind Games (9 Tracks From The Deluxe Edition) Sampler given away with the August 2024 issue (TAKE 328) of Uncut magazine. Card sleeve. John Lennon’s fourth solo album, 1973’s Mind Games, is to be reissued on 19 July 2024 in a range of formats, with an array of remixed audio, outtakes, and rarities. The physical formats will be a super deluxe and deluxe box sets, and 2xLP and 2xCD versions. All audio is remixed from the original 2″ multitrack session tapes. There will also be stereo, 5.1 surround sound, and Dolby Atmos mixes available digitally.
