Minneapolis Symphony

Some months ago, the daily Greek newspaper "To Vima" gave away a collection of 20 CDs, called "Dimitri Mitropoulos - Retrospective". It is a compilation of recordings that Mitropoulos did for Columbia (now Sony). I think some of them are not in the Sony catalogue at the moment. Here is the first box, discs 1-5. Included are: Mozart's Don Giovanni (disc 1-3), Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony and Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kije Suite" & Piano Concerto no.3, with Mitropoulos as soloist and conductor.

Johnson. Distinctive, red paper information labels affixed to the centre of the two affiliated companies' black shellac discs inspired the name.

For vigorous interpretation, orchestral clarity, and emotional impact, this set of Tchaikovsky's six symphonies is hard to discount: even though the recordings are ADD and the acoustics vary noticeably, these readings by Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra are full-blooded and viscerally exciting; and though they were recorded between 1960 and 1965…

Never before have all Arthur Rubinstein albums been available together like this. Arthur Rubinstein – The Complete Album Collection features all of the legendary pianist’s issued recordings made by RCA Victor between 1940 and 1976, plus one recording issued on the DECCA label in 1978. Also included in this set are the recordings Rubinstein made in England for the His Master’s Voice (HMV) label between 1928 and 1940. As a bonus, this special package also has the sensational world-premiere release of two Carnegie Hall concerts recorded on December 8 and 10, 1961.

Phillips' Great Pianists of the 20th Century issue has gotten a lot of publicity in the ten or so years since it has been released. In a musical niche suffering from falling revenues, it was a decent seller. But it left many connoisseurs disappointed, as the quality was limited to the fancy packaging.

Following up on the success of Sony Classical’s recent large-scale Ormandy collections – his monaural discographies with the Minneapolis Symphony and Philadelphia orchestras – the label now presents the conductor’s stereo recordings from Philadelphia containing all recordings released from 1958 to 1963 (plus some fillers from later years) Eugene Ormandy took over the music directorship in Philadelphia from Leopold Stokowski in 1938 and held the position for 42 years. During that time his name and the orchestra’s became inseparable as he cultivated and further developed the voluptuous sound that originated with his predecessor.
