Another in the long line of soundtracks by Tangerine Dream is actually one of the strongest in concept for any film they have done. The movie has a high degree of tension and the score by T.D. does just the trick. They use mostly hard driving sequencer rhythms to maintain the tension of the film. Listeners will find that this is nearly how all of the music is composed. There is very little melody within the structures of the music. But even with this lacking, the score is very well suited and very listenable. A couple of nonsequencer tracks are also on the album and break up the hard rhythms pieces.

Despite being credited to both Edgar Froese and Jerome Froese, in fact only the final track of the disc carries anything of Edgar's fingerprints, being an alternate mix of his own composition Mombasa, originally released just a few months ago on Booster III (2009). All of the other remixes on DM V are solely the result of Jerome's work on classic TD material from the seventies and eighties, all of which have the original music more or less discernible at some point within them. The most deeply buried of the originals is the brief inclusion of a snatch of Rubycon (1975) as an inner layer to The Return of Time, largely swallowed by a newly minted percussion pulse and swathe of electronic textures. Other tracks, however, offer substantial representations of clearly recognisable original thematic materials, in bold but entirely appropriate new ways, such as the title track from Exit (1981) as Flow Paths…

Out of the Ashes was written shortly after the beginning of the Iraqi war. The title track is a three part suite totalling over 40 minutes. The first part. "Miracle Mile" is 16 minute steamroller. Steve Unruh's lyrics are fillied with despair and outrage. Sounding very Kevin Gilbert-like, vocally, the anger, pain and frustration pour out in the character isolated from having any control over the descions to fight in a questionable war, watched through glass, the television screen. The music is powerful, for mostly acoustic instruments, charging and rolling along. A force to be reckoned with, and then seguing to an acoustic guitar and emotive vocals. Unruh, a multi-instrumentalist and virtuouso, pulls off changes in tempo and direction with precision and flair that any full band would be in awe…

Perhaps the business of music is finally catching up with Shannon McNally. Like predecessors Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams, McNally has become a legend on her own terms, and in her own right. Following a string of new original single releases in 2023, co- produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Patty Griffin, Lee Ann Womack) and Shannon herself released by her very own label Queen Maeve Records…the veteran songwriter musician is releasing a career retrospective live album that chronicles her music from root to tip in September 2023.

At long last! World premiere release of oft-requested James Newton Howard score to Joel Schumacher's Falling Down. Dark, violent urban thriller stars Michael Douglas as tragic protagonist on rampage, heading inexorably towards final showdown with retiring cop Robert DuVall. As confrontations grow in intensity, Douglas becomes increasingly unhinged. Howard follows in tow, with initially sparse score growing increasingly dense, clustered as film progresses. Dark ideas, intense action all have their say. Highlights are many, including riveting chase cues, pulsating conflict music, but one standout motif deserves spotlight: Howard writes moving minor-key trumpet solo that plays just once during "not economically viable" scene ("Miracle Mile"), then disappears completely until conclusion ("Falling Down"), where composer now brings film and score together in brilliant, powerful fashion. Sensational writing! Also worthy of attention: haunting series of string chords shifting between minor, major, playing for estranged relationship between everyman Douglas and wife Barbara Hershey. Howard even quotes nursery rhyme "London Bridge", which subtly relates to cop Duvall's own wife Tuesday Weld, who needs the tune to help calm her troubled nerves. It is difficult to overstate dramatic complexities and thematic subtleties of this important music.
