There had, of course, been other fires. Four hundred and fifty years before, the city had almost burned to the ground. Yet the signs from the heavens in 1666 were ominous: comets, pyramids of flame, monsters born in city slums. Then, in the early hours of 2 September, a small fire broke out on the ground floor of a baker's house in Pudding Lane. In five days that small fire would devastate the third largest city in the Western world.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Although it’s mostly experiment that leads to enlightenment – in music and elsewhere – sometimes it’s better to follow the above adage after all, and this is something the L.A.-based quintet Heaven & Earth must be well aware of. In spite of years gone by and major changes within the band as well as outside of it, their newest album Hard To Kill not only picks up where 2013 Dig left off. What is even more surprising – it also doesn’t fall far from 1999 all-star release recorded under the moniker of Heaven & Earth Featuring Stuart Smith, the one that started it all.

After a dark period of mental health stalked most of his 2018 and 19. Slowly but surely, Odell alchemised that experience into a new album. He also realised his broader lyrical horizons needed to be matched by a musical expansion, with a lot of the songs on the album leaning into a more electronic, bedroom pop sound. It was a move underpinned by both necessity and a desire to explore.
