Fanny Bullock Workman was a complicated and restless woman who defied the rigid Victorian morals she found as restrictive as a corset. With her frizzy brown hair tucked under a topee, Workman was a force on the mountain and off. Instrumental in breaking the British stranglehold on Himalayan mountain climbing, this American woman climbed more peaks than any of her peers, became the first woman to map the far reaches of the Himalayas, the first woman to lecture at the Sorbonne and the second to address the Royal Geographic Society of London, whose members included Charles Darwin, Richard Francis Burton, and David Livingstone.

With “The Mountain Between Us,” Hany Abu-Assad, the Oscar-nominated director of “Paradise Now” and “Omar,” found a reason to collaborate with a composer for the first time. He wanted to elevate the survival drama in which journalist Kate Winslet and doctor Idris Elba find themselves trapped 11,000 feet on a snow-covered mountain. And, with Ramin Djawadi (“Game of Thrones” and “Westworld”), Abu-Assad found the right composer to capture the beautiful but deadly musical tone he was after (see the featurette below).

There was always so much more to Mountain's output than those 'hits', largely due to the inspired contrasting of guitarist Leslie West, with his bellowing voice, with the much more smoothly melodic vocals of bassist Felix Pappalardi. They tended to sing their own compositions in the main, and the contrast both of singing and writing styles gave them similarities to the Lennon/McCartney dynamic, and it was this juxtaposition of the two which made Mountain’s all too brief early '70s peak so exciting. Equally compelling are their live performances from this era recorded for FM broadcast. These unique recordings capture the electrifying sense of power that this band could deploy on stage. Although they never achieved their deserved wider acclaim, Mountain's criminally short career would become hugely iconic and influential for any serious rock musician.
