What an odyssee. From West Africa to America to South Africa. The jazz spirit here is so close to the joyful hurly-burly of the pre-bop ensembles, but with a distinctive local tinge of South Africa. The man himself gives plenty of space to his band, so fans of his piano need to look elsewhere if they want undiluted Abdullah Ibrahim.
There's enough sweet lyricism in this album to appeal to romantics, enough feel-good bounce to create a great ambience, and more than enough rootsy friction to ensure that things never get gloopy. No drum solos, overtone blowing, a-tonal excursions or other tricky stuff. Equally at home in a serious jazz collection or a musical magpie's cache.

CLASSIC GRATEFUL DEAD SHOW, 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE SAD PASSING OF JERRY GARCIA This sterling performance from a late period Grateful Dead took place about a year before the sad death of Jerry Garcia in August 1995. Following this event the band, inevitably given the circumstances, called it quits. That said, in summer 94 the Dead were on fire. This show, one of three performed at The Shoreline Theatre in Mountain View, California, in July 94, provides testimony to this as GD work their magic for some two and half hours in the hot California sun across a fine selection of classics from across the group s career. And while, as it turned out, time was not on the Dead s side by this juncture, almost everything else was as this double CD featuring the complete FM radio broadcast of this special concert now illustrates.

An unearthed treasure of a recording from one of Canada's most beloved vocalists and educators, this 2001 studio recording was never released, and is Shannon Gunn's posthumous debut. Shannon tragically passed from cancer in 2020, leaving the music community with a massive void. Shannon inspired hundreds if not thousands of musicians to dedicate their lives to jazz music and her loss was felt by the entire jazz industry. This release comes out just over a year after her passing.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is one of the three most acclaimed orchestras in America and one of the few serious rivals the New York Philharmonic has had in its long history. Curiously, the histories of the two orchestras are somewhat intermingled.

Musically, this band is tough to describe. They are closest to stoner rock, but their instrumental nature and tendency to experiment place them a bit beyond the standards of that genre. With their uncompromising instrumental sound that echoes such desert rock bands as Kyuss and The Obsessed, they were not an easy band to fully understand, but surely an intriguing one. They unofficially disbanded in mid-2002. This special 3CD digipack anthology is limited to a numerated 1500 copies…

Peter Gabriel combines the theatricality of his time as the leader of Genesis in the early '70s with widely appealing sounds and songwriting, making him an international star with the credibility of a cult hero. With his eponymous debut solo album in 1977, he explored dark, cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music. The record, as well as its two similarly titled successors, established Gabriel as a critically acclaimed solo artist, and with 1982's Security, he began to move into the mainstream; "Shock the Monkey" became his first Top 40 hit, paving the way for his breakthrough So in 1986. Accompanied by a series of groundbreaking videos and the number one single "Sledgehammer," So became a multi-platinum hit. Instead of capitalizing on his sudden success, Gabriel founded the Real World label, which proved an invaluable channel for international artists of every stripe to ply their trade.

Authenticity. A word that is frequently used in describing The Cold Stares, and frequently missing from modern music discussions. “We’re not just a blues band, or just a rock band, or anything other than who we are”, front man Chris Tapp says. There is a power and a realness that is arrived at by just doing what you do best. The Cold Stares do that.
